Has Chris Hemsworth hinted at ‘Extraction’ sequel release date?
There’s a new fad in Hollywood. Some of today’s top action movie directors got their feet wet in the industry by being stunt doubles for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Chad Stahelski and David Leitch (who doubled for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, Brad Pitt in Fight Club, and designed fight sequences for 300 and The Expendables) have gone on to make John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2.
One of the newest additions to this growing list of stunt performers turned directors is the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave’s Extraction. Hargrave Spent much of the last decade working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, doubling for Chris Evans in Captain America and setting up stunts for films like Avengers: Endgame. Hargrave also took a turn doubling for Hugh Jackman in Logan.
Extraction was a Netflix vehicle starring Chris Hemsworth as the main character Tyler Rake. It was released at a time when big-budget blockbusters were in flux due to the 2020 pandemic. It went on to be the most-watched Netflix original ever, and the studio immediately fast-tracked the sequel. Has Chris Hemsworth given us a clue on when we will get to see the action-packed follow-up?
Spoiler alert ahead for anyone that hasn’t seen the movie.
Extraction release
A black market mercenary who has nothing to lose is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible. Extraction brought intrigue, deep character emotions, and explosive action scenes that only a former stuntman could create.
Chris Hemsworth introduced a new character to audiences in Extraction’s Tyler Rake, a man that spent his whole life in battle. As a man who delivered death on others, we find him not only welcoming his own death but maybe even seeking it out. Rake is a character that seems opposite of Hemsworth’s Thor, putting the actor’s depth on display.
In 2020, when COVID-19 had all but ground the movie industry – and much of the rest of the world – to a halt, Extraction released to audiences on Netflix to rave reviews. The depth of Hemsworth’s performance and the brutal action sequences gave viewers a new hero to root for and became Netflix’s biggest hit for the platform to date.
Extraction also starred Golshifteh Farahani, Randeep Hooda, David Harbour, and Rudhraksh Jaiswal in addition to Hemsworth & Hargrave.
Extraction 2
The Russo Brothers, who produced the first installment, were more than ready with a follow-up and retained the services of Hargrave and leading man Hemsworth in an attempt to catch that same lightning in a new bottle. Hemsworth was on hand at Netflix’s Tandem Event and teased what was in store.
“If you thought our first film pushed the limits, wait until you see what Sam and I have planned for this next installment.” Fans remember that Hemsworth’s character took a bullet to the neck and fell from a bridge during the climax of Extraction, only to be teased at surviving moments later as a blurry figure in the distance resembling Rake appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-moment before the end credits.
The Russos know what they’re doing, and Hargrave & Hemsworth seem confident at what comes next, but it remains to be seen how the tough-as-nails hero survived the ending and will return.
Release date
While no release date has yet to be confirmed, Joe Russo has commented that Extraction 2 will be a fall 2021 production, meaning the film shouldn’t hit the streaming service this year. It’s more likely to be a summer 2022 release.
Chris Hemsworth will be seen next in his return as his career-defining role Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, due to hit theaters on May 6th, 2022.
