Marvel Studios finally confirms casting for most Disney+ shows: See the full list
Now that we know for sure that Owen Wilson will be joining the cast of the Disney+ series Loki, I guess there’s only one appropriate reaction to all this incredible Marvel casting news . . .
Gee, wow!
At the 2020 Disney Investor Day, we learned from President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige of all the incredible content coming to the Disney+ streaming app, not to mention the impressive casts they’ve assembled for it.
With multiple cinematic-level produced shows coming to the streaming app as soon as January 2021, we wanted to take a closer look at some of the top-billed talent that these shows will marquee.
The MCU comes to Disney+
When we first learned the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would be expanding from the big screen and developing what appears to be a string of separate miniseries based on beloved characters we’ve already met in the MCU, we were a little concerned.
A movie is a short-term commitment, an easy way for fans to keep up with the MCU canon. But MULTIPLE new shows? Might that be too much to follow?
Luckily for us naysayers, a 30-sec spot during the 2020 Super Bowl calmed our nerves, as it felt like we were watching a full-blown movie trailer, featuring a collection of scenes from these upcoming Disney+ shows.
And now that we know the official casts behind these various projects, I think it’s safe to say that Marvel & Disney are swinging for the fences with these MCU shows on Disney+. . . we just hope that there’s no major curveballs along the way.
WandaVision
Ahh, yes, Marvel’s odd yet exceptional romantic storyline involving supporting characters Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) & Vision (Paul Bettany).
This series, set to debut in January 2021, will follow both Wanda & Vision as they live in the town of Westview, enjoying a perfect life worthy of a 1950’s sitcom a la I Love Lucy, only to learn through the decades that things aren’t quite as pleasant as they appear as the two encounter different television tropes.
The last time we saw the android Vision was in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, while Scarlet Witch made an appearance in the follow-up Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Along with Olsen & Bettany, WandaVision will also feature an ensemble cast including Kat Dennings (Thor), Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms, Tomorrowland), Randall Park (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Teyonah Parris (Mad Men).
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
This project looks like Marvel is taking the concept of a “buddy-cop” film to a whole new level.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, slated to premier in March 2021, will follow Avengers’ the Falcon, otherwise known as Sam (Anthony Mackie) as well as Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), teaming up for an adventure in a world without their close friend and mentor, Steve Rogers aka Captain America.
This project, which is being described as a “six-episode movie”, will feature the return of Captain America: Civil War villain Baron Zemo (Inglourious Basterds’ Daniel Brühl).
The impressive cast will also feature Emily Vancamp returning as MCU’s Sharon Carter, as well as fighter Georges St-Pierre returning as Batroc from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Loki
Loki, a clear fan-favorite in the MCU, will see his own adventure in the Disney+ series Loki, taking place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, where we last saw Loki disappear with the Tesseract and into what we can only assume is an alternate universe.
Played once again by the brilliant Tom Hiddleston, the series will also consist of six episodes, debuting sometime in May 2021.
Loki brings an exciting cast to the table, including Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Doctor Who), and Spice World’s Richard E. Grant, who’s probably better known for his work in Logan and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
We just like to talk about 1997’s Spice World starring the Spice Girls whenever we can.
Hawkeye
With Jeremy Renner returning to the helm as the marksman Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, audiences will get the chance to follow the archer’s post Endgame adventures in late 2021.
Joining the Hawkeye cast are Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Pitch Perfect series) as Kate Bishop, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) as Kate’s mother, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul), and even an appearance from the upcoming Black Widow character, Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh (Fighting with my Family).
Other Marvel projects
Along with this already impressive slate of Marvel content, Disney+ will also be producing new shows after 2021 with completely new characters to the MCU, including a She-Hulk show starring Tatiana Maslany in the titular role which will also feature the return of Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction) in his Abomination role from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
Other upcoming Marvel shows such as Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and the much anticipated What If?, an animated series featuring the voices of returning actors from the MCU, will also unload their A-list casting news in the forthcoming months, we’re sure.
