2018 Oscar nominations: ‘The Shape Of Water’ and ‘Three Billboards’ lead the pack
The Oscar nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards have been announced and there’s some surprises inbound. Awards season favorite Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water is leading the pack with thirteen nominations, but recent award winner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is close behind with nine.
Jordan Peele, who was snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has managed to snag four well deserved nominations for his breakout indie hit Get Out, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Lead Actor for Daniel Kaluuya.
Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig, whose name was notoriously absent from the Best Director list at the Golden Globes, received a Best Director nomination for Lady Bird. She is, however, the only woman nominated in the category.
Netflix’s Mudbound has rustled up four nominations, including a well earned Best Supporting Actress nod for Mary J. Blige. Sadly, though, Dee Rees didn’t land the Best Director nod that many hoped she would, and the film failed to secure a Best Picture nomination.
Interestingly, there’s a lack of nominations for A24’s critically acclaimed The Florida Project, with the film having secured a single nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for Willem Dafoe‘s stunning performance.
