Save 'Anne with an E' fans are still fighting for their show. Here's why the young adult period drama is so important to them, in their own words.

Save ‘Anne With an E’: The fans speak, pt. 1

#AnneWithAnnE fans have spoken, again, and the general consensus is that Netflix really, really needs to renew the beloved series after its third season. If you’re keeping up with our Twitter thread, you’ll know how heartbroken the fandom is over the news of Anne with an E’s cancellation — we simply cannot cope without our misadventures in the whimsical Avonlea.

Following the popularity of last week’s article on the topic, the Film Daily team is back to delve further into the fandom to retrieve your passionate responses. In the words of Anne — we’re utterly bursting with curiosity!

Anne with an E redefines girlhood & womanhood

Fans have praised how Anne with an E deals with equality in a tactful light, from feminism to education, young women are feeling empowered.

Yane_nt said that Anne with an E made her realize that her possibilities are endless.

“It helped me understand that as a woman my possibilities are endless, […] I can feel whole by working hard on myself and the things that I like and most importantly: Education is freedom.”

annesglbrt rejoiced in the notion that Anne with an E helped her find her footing as a young woman.

“Because of Anne with an E, I was able to accept and love myself. It gave me hope and taught me how to view life in a better light. I’m not exaggerating when I say [that] without the show I’m lost.”

thwipshirbert stated that watching Anne with an E feels like being wrapped in a fuzzy, warm, and wholly inclusive blanket.

“It [Anne with an E] needs to go on because watching it feels like being enveloped in a warm cozy blanket. Because you become completely engrossed in the whimsical imagination of Anne. Because her sheer determination is what has taught us to allow our voices to be heard!” #renewannewithane

Anne with an E applauds diversity

Anne with an E finds a natural progression into diversity in a time period that offers little, and fans are noticing.

rubydumbass gets straight to the point by stating that Anne with an E tells a realistic story without whitewashing Canadian history.

“[Anne with an E] has a lot of powerful messages, a realistic story that doesn’t whitewash Canadian history and introduces loveable new characters of different races, sexualities, and backgrounds. The best show ever!” #renewannewithan2 #SAVE_AWAE

AnneWithAnESafe declared that anyone can have an emotional connection to one or more characters from the show.

“The themes/topics this series addresses are so important and not seen enough nowadays. Everyone can feel represented by one (or more) of the characters in the show.”

mstr_worldwide loved that Anne with an E respects the lives of often marginalized individuals.

“I have so much respect for orphans/indigenous people because of the show. I was unaware of the hardships/prejudices against [these individuals] and the LGBTQ+ community. It helps others and myself realize that there are people fighting bigger battles.”

ClaudiaMoren0 noted that Anne with an E approaches topics and issues without romanticizing them.

“The show talks about important issues without romanticizing them!!! It has LGBTQ+, deaf, POC, and indigenous representation.”

Anne with an E prompts you to relish the world around you.

Fans of Anne with an E  are applauding how the show appeals to multiple generations through messages about finding inspiration in nature, whilst never turning a blind eye on hope.

MiraRenew watches Anne with an E with their mom as a bonding experience.

Anne with an E is a show that I (over 20) watch with my mom. I’m American but grew up on the Canadian border with the 1985 version. I love the fresh spin AWAE puts on the source material and how inclusive it is.” #awaeseason4 #renewannewithana

Cinematography as stunning as the representation

The fandom has taken notice of the show’s gorgeous Canadian backdrop, which only enhances the effectiveness of this period piece.

uwontfeelathing wrote that Anne with an E is a timeless and visually stunning masterpiece.

“[Anne with an E] is a visually stunning masterpiece. The show’s creators didn’t use the excuse that it’s a period piece to exclude diversity in the cast and writing.”

EllaPhillips_13 stated that Anne with an E  is both visually beautiful, and that it has changed lives through its messages.

“It’s an amazing show with wonderful representation and it doesn’t sugarcoat anything. The cinematography is amazing and it [has] changed so many people’s lives by telling them to love themselves and be kind. It really is the best show out there.” #renewannewithane #SAVE_AWAE

  • Anne with an E, is a rare tv show that talks about important issues. That need to be talked about. It shows you people are different, and that’s okay its great to be different. Also it talks about bullies/bulling, racism, freedom of speech, human rights and so much more..

  • Anne with an E is a good distraction when life is overwhelming. It has taught me to be a better person and to have compassion for others and seeing things from their point of view. Even tho its set in the 1890s so is it very relevant to our current society. Awae deals with many serious subjects that are very important for everybody to learn about and treat with respect. It’s my favorite show and its relatable for all ages. For Christmas, I wish for the Anne of Green gabels books and for the show to be renewed. Please don´t take away a so wonderful show! #renewannewhitane

  • At this point, I don’t think anyone disagrees with the show’s beneficial qualities and award winning artistry. I just think they don’t care. This is a time of disposable entertainment and disposable fans. There’s no need to care about content nor nurture a fan base anymore. There’s no longevity or loyalty involved in on the production side of things, nor in being a fan. Making excessive money is the first priority of these streaming services, and any poor show based on socially responsible content stands no chance. It’s just ironic that a character who taught us that every individual can make a difference if we stand up for what we believe in, is ultimately showing us, that we can’t.
