In Which Tony Stark Built His Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) by scifigrl47
Colloquially known as “The Toasterverse”, scifigrl47’s epic masterpiece of a series came out prior to The Avengers. The series largely takes place in the POV of Tony Stark, human disaster, who is trying to get used to having people who actually care about him mixed with some confusing feelings toward Steve Rogers. The series is hilarious and heartwarming with major “Avengers as a found family” vibes.
The series pairings are Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Thor/Jane Foster with numerous other side pairings. It also folds in both the MCU and other Marvel properties such as the X-Men, Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies, and more. It’s a great rich world, and a major bummer that the series hasn’t been updated since 2015. But what’s there is amazing and you need to check it out.
Culture and Other Balls of Twine by LithiumDoll
Following the events of the 2012 Avengers movie, Tony “kidnaps” Bruce to go on a road trip before having to deliver to a special lab to work. During the trip, Nick Fury sends the other members of The Avengers to come get the erstwhile heroes except that they are brought along for the ride as well. It’s definitely sweet to see them all coming together and at five chapters with 17,000 words, it packs a lot into the story.
Seriously, though, this is relatively underrated fic. It’s great for if you’re looking for a nice post-The Avengers fic.
Magazineverse by copperbadge
Copperbadge is a prolific fanfic author across several fandoms. Seriously, their work is some of the best out there. If we have to choose one Avengers fanfiction by Copperbadge, then we’re going with the Magazineverse. Written as an outsider POV, a writer follows the Avengers for a couple days so people, at large, can get to know the mysterious superheroes.
Done in the style of a magazine article, the first two fics in the series are great, taking place post Avengers and post Winter Soldier respectively. The reveal of who the author is at the end of the first fic is too great not to spoil here. Basically, this is an excellent series showcasing some great character dynamics while keeping in tone with a feature magazine article.
let’s keep our eyes on the cracks by napricot
You remember how people really wanted Thanos to be defeated by Scott Lang going up his butt and then expanding, blowing him up? Yeah. That was a theory. This fanfic imagines it along with the aftermath in the most hilarious way possible. It’s so glorious. If you don’t like how Avengers: Endgame ended things, then go for the most hilarious way possible.
Seriously, we almost died laughing several times during the fic. “Dont say buttsplosion,” indeed.
Wear Your Heart on Your Skin by theredbook
This AU series follows piercist Bucky returning home for service with a traumatic brain injury and working at tattoo artist Steve Rogers’ shop. The other Avengers appear as well with various friends and connections growing with time. The first fic in the series finishes out at about 40 chapters of an excellent slow burn and explores a lot of the relationships between the group.
Unfortunately, the second fic stopped updating in 2018, but the 18 chapters that are there are pretty great. Seriously, the first fic is absolutely riveting to read.
