Twisted serial killer Karla Homolka: Now living a totally normal life

Karla Homolka (also sometimes known as Karla Leanne Teale) was born in 1970 in Canada. She was the eldest of three daughters and the family lived in Ontario. When she grew up Homolka began working in animal clinics, though at her second job she began to steal drugs from her workplace.

In 1987 Homolka met Paul Bernardo, at the time of their meeting she was seventeen and he was twenty-three – Bernardo proposed to her on Christmas eve, December 24th, of that same year.

The Homolka family liked Bernardo and he spent a lot of time with them. However, he wasn’t exactly a saint. He became obsessed with Karla Homolka’s sister, Tammy. Bernardo would peep into Tammy’s bedroom window and even enter her room while she slept in order to masturbate. Karla Homolka was perfectly aware of this and even broke her sister’s blinds in order to give Bernardo better access to her sister.

The crimes

One night Karla Homolka laced spaghetti sauce with crushed Valium (stolen from the clinic she worked at) and gave it to her sister. When Tammy fell unconscious Bernard raped her and Karla Homolka watched.

In December of 1990 the engaged couple were partying with Tammy, but Karla slipped Halothane into her sister’s cocktail because she wanted to gift her sister’s virginity to Bernardo since he was disappointed he wasn’t her first sexual partner. When Tammy lost consciousness they unclothed her, and videotaped their acts. Tammy began to vomit while still unconscious.

The engaged couple clothed her and hid the evidence of their misdeeds before calling 911. Tammy later died without ever waking back up, and the death was declared accidental due to the overconsumption of alcohol – despite suspicious evidence implying otherwise.

In 1991 Bernardo kidnapped a fourteen-year-old girl, named Leslie Mahaffy, who had accidentally been locked outside of her house. He blindfolded the girl and drove her to Port Dalhousie and told Homolka he had found them a playmate. The recordings of their crimes against the woman include Bernardo implying he may let the girl if she behaves well. However, when her blindfold begins to slip the pair worried she could identify them and they killed her.

In 1992 the couple were driving around hunting for their next victim, they chose a fifteen-year-old named Kristen French. Homolka pretended to need directions and then Bernardo snuck up behind her before forcing her into the vehicle. French was usually very timely in arriving home from school so when she was late her parents immediately became alarmed.

Over the weekend the couple abused French physically and sexually while recording it all before eventually killing the teen.

Karla Homolka now

After twelve years in prison during July of 2005 Homolka was released. Because she was still considered dangerous nine stipulations accompanied her release, including having to keep police apprised of her residence, any name change, any plans to be away from her home for over forty-eight hours, a prohibition from being around anyone under the age of sixteen, and a handful of others.

In 2006 Homolka tried to have her name changed for anonymity purposes, however her request was denied. In 2007 she gave birth to a baby boy, but social services did not intend to automatically scrutinize her because of her past. For a while she worked and volunteered at the school where her two children attended.

However, as of 2020 Holmoka is living alone without her children or husband.
