When can we see Jordan Peele’s new untitled movie? Everything to know
Jordan Peele is celebrated as one of the breakout directors of the century with his blockbuster horror films, Get Out & Us. Now he is slated to bring a new terror to the screen according to Universal Pictures. Here’s what we know about the new movie.
Universal Pictures confirms Jordan Peele’s third directorial effort will be released July 22, 2022. However, the Oscar-winning director of Get Out & Us tends to keep the details of his new movies tightly under wraps, so we don’t really know much else about this new film.
Deadline reports the new movie will keep Peele in the horror genre. Based on his previous offerings, we can expect socially conscious themes, pertinent commentary, and a healthy amount of spookiness. The writer-director has emerged as one of the genre’s most acclaimed voices in recent years thanks to the successes of Get Out & Us.
Buzziest blockbuster
Get Out became one of the buzziest movies of the twenty-first century after it opened in February 2017 to acclaim and huge box office returns, earning $255 million on a $4.5 million production budget. It also became a box office blockbuster, grossing over $255 million worldwide. Get Out ended the year as the tenth most profitable film of 2017.
Jordan Peele has become one of the new wave and most innovative and sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood today. He picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, one of four Oscar nominations the movie received. Get Out was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, making Peele only the fifth Black filmmaker in history to compete for the Academy Award for Best Director.
Busy brother
The new, upcoming movie will be Jordan Peele’s first time in the director’s chair since 2019’s Us. However, in the meantime, he’s been busy as a writer & producer on Nia DaCosta’s Candyman, a follow-up to the 1992 original movie that’s scheduled for release in August 2021. It was also recently reported that Peele is on board to produce a remake of Wes Craven’s cult horror classic The People Under the Stairs.
Meanwhile, on the small screen, Peele’s been a writer and executive producer on 2019’s The Twilight Zone remake, as well as executively producing Amazon Prime’s Hunters, starring Logan Lerman & Al Pacino as Nazi hunters in 1970s New York, & HBO’s horror-drama series Lovecraft Country. (There’s also buzz that Peele and Issa Rae are adapting Leena Crow’s short story Sinkhole for Universal.) Anyway, he’s a busy man.
Mind macabre
Shortly after the release of Get Out, Jordan Peele said he already had four additional new genre movies ready to roll out over the next decade. Us was one of these projects, and it appears Peele is ready to start work on the next. “I have four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade,” Peele said at the time.
“The best and scariest monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of especially when we get together,” Peele explained. “I’ve been working on these premises about these different social demons, these innately human monsters that are woven into the fabric of how we think and how we interact, and each one of my movies is going to be about a different one of these social demons.”
As for whether or not the July 2022 film could be an Us sequel, the jury is still out. Peele said after the Us release that he was open to keeping the door open for future installments set in the same universe. When pitched the idea of an Us movie universe, the writer-director responded, “Sure! It’s a fun one. There’s a lot going on there. The ‘Us-verse’ . . . I like that.”
