2020 has not been Ellen DeGeneres’s year. Here's what being in 'The Ellen Degeneres Show' audience is actually like.

Not-so-fun: What being in ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ audience is like

2020 was not Ellen DeGeneres’s year. She has faced all kinds of criticism for a whole variety of behaviors, such as complaining about being stuck in her mansion during quarantine, acting like a tyrant on set, treating employees poorly, and now, the same accusations are coming from her audience members. Turns out, being an audience member at The Ellen DeGeneres Show might not be the fun & games it seems.

An incident, in particular, has been highlighted as being particularly heinous & improper. Although the incident was aired under the guise of good fun, as both Ellen & the audience member that was targeted smiled while the cameras were rolling, a closer examination of what happened reveals the truth: Ellen is downright mean.

In an incident that occurred a little while ago, Ellen set up a desk at the front of her studio to “see how honest the audience was”. She laid out Ellen’s merchandise and told audience members they were allowed to take one item each, at no cost. While the event looked like a gift, the intention was actually a little more sinister. Ellen clearly states she wanted to see if she could catch anyone violating the terms of the giveaway. In other words, she was looking for people to call out.

Ellen did say that the majority of her audience members that day did actually adhere to the guidelines and take only one item each. However, the daytime host wasted absolutely no time publicly shaming an audience member that didn’t.

Ellen’s team set up the table, rigged it with hidden cameras, and did not tell the incoming audience members that they were currently being filmed. The hidden cameras captured an audience member clearly taking more than the one gift item. Ellen used the footage of this occurring, without the woman’s permission, and aired it during the show, shaming the woman on national television for her actions.

As Ellen calls this woman out as the show is airing, she is smiling and giggling. However, the language she is using clearly denotes her true feelings on the issue. She uses the words “stolen items” and suggests that the audience member probably shoplifts and steals in other situations too. Ellen lectures the audience member, who we learn is called Nancy, about being a good person.

The audience aren’t alone in suffering the wrath of Ellen. Here’s our article bringing you the most cringeworthy interviews hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

As if the humiliation of being publicly called out on camera wasn’t enough, Ellen then demands that the audience member move from her seat and sit in “Ellen jail”. The audience member is moved to a prominent location at the front of the set, ensuring everyone can see her at all times. Ellen appeared to delight in the public humiliation of her fans.

Have you always wanted to go and participate in a taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show? Well, we found the rules the show has created for members of its audience. Check out this exhaustive list of do’s and don’ts that you must adhere to if you’re sitting in one of her coveted audience seats. We gotta say, some of them are pretty out there, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show appears unapologetic about them all!

Do you want to see just how mean Ellen can be? Here’s our article focused on the most problematic episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Rules for audience

  • Leave your knitting needles at home – meaning you can’t bring in weapons
  • No shouting out things – even if you’re showing love to guest onstage
  • Metal detectors are used – they say it’s tighter than airport security
  • Prepare to be cold – they keep the temp pretty low in the studio
  • No autographs – the size of the audience and lack of time are cited as reasons
  • Arrive in the biggest car you can – you could be the one taking home the massive amount of freebies Ellen gives away
  • Fans have to dress for the occasion – “dressy jeans” at a minimum and you should wear bright colors
  • Coordinating outfits isn’t allowed – you can’t coordinate outfits with your friends for reasons unknown. You do have the opportunity to purchase Ellen-related clothes in the backstage hangout area but you cannot wear that during the show taping either

  • The audience must be prepared to dance – it seems just as much time is spent on your feet as it is in your seat
  • Even celebrities have to dance – even in the 30-second commercial breaks fans are told to dance and even the celebrity guests aren’t safe from the constant demands
  • You must take care of your own accommodation – the show’s online FAQs section doesn’t even offer suggestions
  • Fans with special needs must give two weeks’ notice – although this rule may seem a little excessive during this lengthy period of notice the producers can ensure any potential issues are ironed out
  • Anyone under 14 is out of luck – you must provide a valid ID showing your age. Event celebrity guests under the age of 14 can’t technically sit in the audience
  • Fans have to line up outside – luckily the weather in LA is mild but fans have reported waiting hours before producers let them in

  • Fans need to be there super early – if you don’t have guaranteed seats then you better be in line early
  • Snacks are forbidden – If you try to sneak food in be prepared for some severe consequences
  • Fans might be separated from their family and friends – you get a number and that’s the order in which you can enter the studio so you may end up by strangers
  • Info about the show is kept top secret – you have an idea of what you’re going to get but most of it is kept secret. The first time you find out which celeb is coming is when they walk out on the stage
  • Each row has to devise their own dance – the rows are asked to devise their own dance moves and perform it in unison
  • Front row fans must know today’s pop hits – you gotta bust out your best dance moves and also be singing along to the hit that’s playing. I hope you’re good at multi-tasking
  • Game players must be super chipper – no surprise here. No one wants to watch a dud onstage

  • Even the clapping is choreographed – The audience is told exactly when and how to respond by a designated staff member
  • No t-shirts or shorts – no flip flops or hats either
  • Producers check your excitement – if you want to increase your chances of being chosen as a participant during the show then you better bring your A-game when it comes to energy
  • Fans must get gifts checked by security – no one gets to deliver a present by hand to Ellen and they must all go through security before getting to her
  • Fans get just one freebie – don’t try to take home more than one freebie. You may just get caught and called out in front of everyone

  • Chewing gum is forbidden – gum is a no-no as it’s not attractive on the screen and may keep you from singing those pop hits when Ellen enters. Oh yeah it’s a pain to clean up too
  • You can’t sell your tickets – if you’re lucky enough to get tickets don’t even try reselling them to make money. If the person who shows up isn’t the person on the ticket then they won’t get in
  • Recording the show is a no-no – fans can keep their cell phones but they must be switched off while in the studio
  • Travel expenses aren’t reimbursed after a canceled show – if you live in the area you’re probably fine but if you’re coming from out of town you might be losing a small fortune

  • Of course the set is cold… all the equipment has to be in a cool environment or it could destroy it. And I totally understand giving seating tickets and sitting next to strangers. Have you ever been last to sit at a movie theater?

    August 9, 2020
    • Oh please.. The studio is cold because someone prefers it that way. Filming equipment is used in all sorts of weather environments.

      August 9, 2020
    • These rules are typical. I was in the studio audience for a taping of The Chew and it wasn’t much different, except they didn’t give you anything. Your could get a granola bar and and a small bottle of water while you waited to get in, until they were gone.
If you want to be in the audience, you have to follow their rules.

      August 9, 2020
    • Yeah, I had that reaction too! The lights and equipment makes the set warm (and all the people), so they HAVE to cool it. Also, these rules are pretty standard… Price is Right is very similar, if not the same set of rules.

      August 9, 2020
    • These are normal rules for talk show audiences. This is a stretch.

      August 9, 2020
    • I totally agree!

      August 10, 2020
    • I’ve been to her show 2 times and we had a great time!!!! Yes there are alot of rules but it didn’t bother us ..and I love dancing so that didn’t bother us either …we had a great time and she was funny I would go again in a heart beat …me and my sisters sat together too…best time ever

      August 10, 2020
    • Not to mention all those dancing bodies! I would rather it be cold than stifling hot!

      August 10, 2020
    • Honestly I don’t see any issue with any items on this list. This is a production. The live audience is equivalent to extras on a film set, so of course there going to expect you to act and dress a certain way. Second your the one paying for the tickets, if you have a problem with the way business is conducted don’t buy tickets. This is a business and these things are done a certain way, they have to be done a certain way to make everything run smoothly. Second, I understand why that might have been embarassing for the women to be called out, but as someone who works in a grocery store that probably means they are having issues with people taking more items then allowed or in other words stealing. How do you stop that? Make an example. Yeah it might have been embarrassing but she did steal, theres no sugar coating it, so she has to face the consequences. Really I don’t see the issue with any of her actions outlined in this article.

      August 10, 2020
    • It is cold in the studios. The lights are very HOT. Went to Dr. Phill a few years ago. It was a long wait….., standing. I think it probably takes time to get everyone thing all set up. It was very cold because of the light. We wouldn’t want to see Dr. Phil or Ellen sweating.
Hope this all works out for Ellen.
      Ok

      August 10, 2020
  • I’ve been saying this for years she gets pleasure out of humiliating people you can see it on her face. I think she’s plain evil. I stopped watching her show years lago. I hated the way she treated and she still treats Andy I didnt realize it but now though I guess what goes around comes around. Karma is a bitch and her name is Ellen.

    August 9, 2020
    • I agree Dori. We don’t watch her anymore either. I think she likes humiliating ticket holders and her producer. She has really gotten a big head. The only people she does NOT treat badly is her famous quests. She likes being with the IN crowd.

      August 9, 2020
    • I felt the same way , I felt she enjoyed exploiting embarrassing people she used money as a disguise which was never her money , shed make people cry and then give them money from shutterfly……never ever her own money even when Portia gave her the animal center she asked everyone to pay for it ?

      August 9, 2020
    • The fact that she treats her producer’s awful should be a SIGN

      August 9, 2020
    • Totally same here

      August 10, 2020
    • Well if anyone watches the show ever in there life they know Ellen does things like that all the time. So you should know to expect a camera being set up. If you never seen the shoe then why you bother to go

      August 10, 2020
    • She’s a nasty person who treats people as if they are below her. Her money has spoiled her but shouldn’t have if she was a decent person. I stopped watching it years ago when I realized she was not a nice person.

      August 10, 2020
    • Yet people go on her show knowing that. Anything for 15 minutes.

      August 10, 2020
    • She’s a sick, sinister person wearing the guise of a comedian.

      August 10, 2020
    • Leave Ellen a long…..
I love Ellen and always will. The rules do not seem unreasonable at all. Stop hating and trying to destroy on of the last decent humans in Hollywood.
      Love you Ellen ❤️

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree with you Dori I quit watching after seeing the show where she belittled her guest Karen. I found it very cruel and Ellen seemed to enjoy humiliating the poor women. Guess payback is a b___h!

      August 10, 2020
    • Same. Ellen revels in humiliating everyone, audience members and guests alike. Those games on the show are designed for her pure and sick entrainment. I also stopped watching her show when I realized she was wasting my precious time..and that she was just downright mean to everyone.

      August 10, 2020
    • Beautiful thank you for the truth

      August 10, 2020
    • I always thought she was a little sinister. then when her game show came on and I kept watching her she took such delight in petrifying people and in watching them run into each other and humiliate each other. I just thought it was odd that someone would get so much pleasure out of that. I stopped watching her ever since.

      August 10, 2020
    • Ego Ego Ego. She clearly forgot what it means to be the Average person. She wasn’t always so lucky to be a chosen one, rich, and successful. Too bad. Jay Leno is a regular guy even though even very rich

      August 10, 2020
    • I’m indifferent about Ellen and her show, so have rarely watched it. But if you know the rules going in and can’t abide them, don’t go!

This goes for just about anything- don’t subject yourself to things you can’t do. Or, you just may suffer the consequences.

      August 10, 2020
    • So Ellen is wrong and the lady who did not follow directions is ok? This is what a good parent would do, or should do.

      August 10, 2020
    • Very true, she is someone I would never want to know personally.

      August 11, 2020
  • The above is bulls–t. I have been in the audience at the Ellen show. They have some rules but not they sre portrayed above. We had a great time. The dancing was fun.

    August 9, 2020
    • Look, the rules mostly adhere to any taping of talk shows in America. Look it up. But I’ve always hated the way Ellen mocks people (be they guests or audience members) … I think it’s fair that she’s being called out but let’s keep it at a civilised tone, folks

      August 9, 2020
    • The audience rules seem a little ridiculous, but they are not unlike those I experienced when I was able to get tickets to Dr. Phil nearly two decades ago. That experience turned me off so much I pretty much stopped watching his show. The thing is you’re not there to be a fan, you’re there to be a prop and help maintain the image. Can Ellen be mean? Yup. But she hasn’t hidden it. It’s suddenly become fashionable to pick on her for it. The easiest thing to do is simply to stop watching. That’s what I did.

      August 9, 2020
    • Go see Ellen? I quote Jack Nicholson from a movie…”I’d rather stick needles in my eyes!”

      August 10, 2020
    • People love to kick someone when they’re down. I watched segments like that and it is funny. The lady should’ve followed the rules! And about the rules for the audience… BIG DEAL!!! If its SO BAD don’t go! Couldn’t be all that bad concidering tickets are nearly impossible to get!!

      August 10, 2020
    • I stopped watching Ellen because I think she is evil disguised as a giving human being.
She does horrible things to people and thinks it’s hilarious. I wonder what she would think if someone she scared ” all on good Ellen fun” would have a heart attack? Would she get pleasure out of that??
She had Andy eat raw flour and she and Twitch laughed hysterically over it. There is a warning on the flour bag against eating raw flour but I guess their pleasure outweighs someone getting ill.
I have often asked myself if Andy has any self respect at all.
      She is evil.

      August 10, 2020
    • I’ve also been in the Ellen audience and I loved it. It was a fun day and I think Ellen is an amazing person. Some people just like to find a reason to make shit up. I bet the people bashing her would be first in line if she was handing them gifts or cash. Unfortunately Ellen must have really ticked someone off and now they are trying to bring her down. Stay strong Ellen, not all of us are against you. I’m a fan for real and not because I want something from Ellen

      August 10, 2020
  • Am I crazy?! I think there’s too many sensitive Sally’s out there. That woman was told, not to take anything other than one item.. so she takes two… she deserves to be so called “shamed”. She’s not special or entitled. That’s the darn problem with society. You don’t think you should have consequences for wrong behavior. And.. OMG.. after reading the “rules” of the Ellen show.. they’re no different than Rachel Ray or the View. The author of this article is CLEARLY on the bandwagon of shaming Ellen at the moment and did not research what other shows do. What a Karen.

    August 9, 2020
    • Riiiight!! She stole! Let’s call a spade a spade and stop blaming Ellen .

      August 9, 2020
    • Thank you, the rules were clear.

      August 9, 2020
    • Another problem with society is bullying. Labeling anyone “Karen” in a derogatory manner is bullying; a true societal problem.

      August 9, 2020
    • I was a part of the Christmas Light fight. They had rules as well. We had to clap at certain times etc. People are just being negative now. I feel bad for Ellen. Sad we can’t lift people up these days.

      August 9, 2020
    • My thoughts exactly!! This is getting way out of hand.

      August 9, 2020
    • I wish I can like your comment. Well said in my opinion!👌👍

      August 9, 2020
    • I agree, too many sensitive Sally’s and negative Nancy’s. I saw the “shaming” episode and thought it was hilarious!

      August 9, 2020
    • Totally agree! The audience experience is typical of all shows. I waited in line for hours, freezing studio etc. Shame on the woman who took more than her share. She probably wasn’t the only one. Not defending Ellen, just saying she is being criticized for things others do too.

      August 10, 2020
    • Don’t use someone ‘s name to shame others. Maybe you should say “Don’t be a Maggie” A name has nothing to do with making your point. It just shows that you are keen to insult others. Shame shame!!

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree 100%! Be grateful AND respectful to someone that’s GIVING you something. The fact that EVERY OTHER AUDIENCE MEMBER respected the 1 item rule says something towards the honor and trustworthiness of the woman who didn’t. Ellen had every right to call her out as ALL of those items are her property. Also, anyone who’s ever watched The Ellen Show KNOWS that dancing is the heart of it. After all, SHE HAS A PROFESSIONAL DJ ON HER SHOW!!

      August 10, 2020
    • These are normal rules for a studio audience, similar to any taping I have been to. The lower temps helps keep folks alert after all the waiting around

      August 10, 2020
    • Ellen show sucks. Hope James Corden replaces her. At least he’s funny.

      August 10, 2020
    • If you’re crazy then I’m crazy too because I feel the exact same way. I’m not a huge Ellen fan but this is ridiculous

      August 10, 2020
    • I 100% agree with you

      August 10, 2020
    • Agree 100%

      August 10, 2020
    • Agree with you too.. I never want to shame anyone, and I must admit, It was a bit cringy watching that episode. But then again, is stealing good? People, wake up! I still believe that Ellen is a nice person.. Not that I don’t believe the people who said they felt toxic working with Ellen/ellen show! But then again bosses are usually toxic! And it’s not uncommon. I haven’t heard a single acceptable explanation yet as to how Ellen literally became a toxic boss.

      August 10, 2020
    • I thought it was just me…I didn’t think it was mean at all…she was given an instruction and she didn’t follow it, being sneaky. Now your choice is displayed for everyone to see…oh well…and all these types of shows have pretty much the same rules, not just Ellen.

      August 10, 2020
  • Thanx ya ellen be funny in the old old days but I change the channel every time she comes on not a nice person but peopldrawn to used all that dumb stuff

    August 9, 2020
    • Same here, she’s a jerk

      August 10, 2020
    • I believe as well she takes great enjoyment in humiliating her guest, and doing things that are inappropriate on Her shows, I’m not a big fan of Hers I no longer watch Her, and haven’t for 3 yrs

      August 10, 2020
    • But,,, have you been in the audience?? This just seems like an opinion.

      August 10, 2020
    • We’re you in the audience?

      August 10, 2020
  • I was in the audience, saw nothing wrong or offensive about the requirements. I think Ellen needs to run for governor of California!! Something needs to be done about this state.

    August 9, 2020
    • Must be a Trump supporter too 😂😂

      August 10, 2020
    • So voting in another Democrat is your solution??? Unbelievable. U do realise the Democrats are purposely letting the cities burn& not allowing businesses to be open so the owners will lose everything &then not pay their rent . So the Democrat leaders can then buy the properties right?!???

      August 10, 2020
    • Bleeccchhhhh….all this stuff couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
ALWAYS GAVE ME THE HEEBIE JEEBIES

      August 10, 2020
  • Just sounds like a horrible childish woman
Manipulative person who if cannot get her own way gets aggressive to her staff and audience. Never liked her, not funny and keeps VERY VERY STRANGE friends like Oprah Winfrey, also was pals with Epstein. Say no more….

    August 9, 2020
    • Birds of a feather, flock together FOR SURE !!!!!!! And John, KUDDOS to you for pointing out the absolute truth. Both these women insight and instigate hate and discontent, and well before pre-pandemic !!! The next thing you know they’ll be throwing their hats (“crowns”) into the political ring ….god help us all !!!!

      August 9, 2020
    • How is Oprah considered to be a “VERY VERY STRANGE” friend? I’m not going to comment about Epstein, as I’d never heard about that, but Oprah? Maybe you meant Bush??

      August 9, 2020
    • 100%agree

      August 10, 2020
    • Were you ever in the audience? That’s what they’re asking…

      August 10, 2020
    • They have a word for her. It is a mental disorder called BIPOLAR. Enough said. It is a shame that she calls out people like that. But I guess when you have all the money she has you can do what you want. Nice is nice, but mean is mean.

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree …. the whole set looking like Epstein’s island also is just sickening …… like she’s proud of what they all did to those young children……. Hopefully soon Ellen, Oprah and the rest of them get what is coming to them . And it will be Ellen’s turn to be front and center stage and HUMILIATED in front of the world for her crimes! JS….. #savethechildren #Achildsvoice #Disneygate

      August 10, 2020
  • the question is how did Ellen get away with humiliating an audience member. Is it even legal to film secretly? Must have been a very weird atmosphere for her to do that and no one stopping it.

    August 9, 2020
    • A lot of times they are people who work for her or people she knows. They are not always audience members. People think they are, but they are not usually. She sets this stuff up before hand to be funny. When people have gotten upset before she has explained this.

      August 9, 2020
    • These celebrities really think they are the most oppressed group and the ultimate sufferers of life. Staying in mansions and having millions of dollars, and they decide to mock someone for ‘stealing’ while saying ‘be kind to one another’. Do they not have any sense? These rules are also written in a cringeworthy way. People should stop going to these shows and stop giving these celebrities any attention. They aren’t fun. An average, random YT video comment section is more fun than their existence. Let’s be unkind to celebrities.

      August 9, 2020
    • Frankly, I’m not certain what is wrong with the list of dos and don’ts. It seems to cover everything and if someone doesn’t like it, well, don’t go.

As for the so/called humiliation, it is stated on the list that there is a possibility that it will happen.

It is an entertainment show, why would anyone who is interested in being in the audience not want to know what is expected?

Many people sit aside and try to tear down anyone in the public eye because they earn lots of money instead of trying to make something of their own life.

When I read the article from the fifty two years old man who claimed that he was verbally abuse by her at eleven when she was twenty. Why didn’t he tell his mother and have her fired? This was forty one years ago, really?

While I have never caused distress to anyone and have known people who have and do not believe that it should happen and wouldn’t put up with it, I do question this, why now? Makes no sense to me.

      August 10, 2020
    • Surely on the ticket to an audience TV show you agree to be filmed.

      August 10, 2020
    • Is it legal to film 😂😂😂😂, on a live t.v. show, oh geez, I nearly spit my coffee out.

      August 10, 2020
    • She is evil. Some of the games are so bad she laughs when she humiliates people. Someday someone is going to get hurt badly or she will give someone a heart attack, then what. She is smug not funny. Those supporting her DON’T work for her.

      August 10, 2020
    • I dont believe the guest that took 2 items while told to just take 1 was the funniest thing I ever saw. I bet she will never pickup anything that doesn’t belong to her. Ellen just wanted to show how some people do not follow rules.

      August 10, 2020
    • I hear she not nice at all. I would never go on her show.

      August 10, 2020
    • Security cameras ding dong. And who cares? The woman should have taken one thing. I don’t care about Ellen but I do not condone greed and theft.

      August 10, 2020
    • Good Lord it’s on your ticket. Once you enter the WB lot you have given up your right to privacy. This is true in any studio or any theme park you go to. Where is your right not to be filmed in a film studio written? I’ll wait. You go find it and read your ticket.

      August 10, 2020
    • They sign a waiver stating that by being in the studio audience, there may be a chance they are filmed and cannot take any action against anyone associated with the show.

      August 11, 2020
  • Nothing about these rules sounds unreasonable. Nothing.

    August 9, 2020
    • I’ve been to other talk shows and some of these same rules apply to all…I also saw this episode, I thought she was funny, not mean and the woman got to be in the front for the whole show, not a bad deal!

      August 9, 2020
    • I live in Chicago and went to a taping of Oprah and all the rules were similar! Excorbhad to stand in the freezing cold while first snow was being taped! Also, no cell phones took them as you walked in !

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree!

      August 10, 2020
    • Completely agree !

      August 10, 2020
    • Seriously this sounds pretty standard for any studio audience experience. These shows don’t invite audiences purely for their own enjoyment. They are like extras whose primary role is to make the show look fun and popular to the people at home and laugh at the jokes. People tend to only realize this after they participate in an audience.

      August 10, 2020
    • I totally agree!

      August 10, 2020
    • I so agree with you its called policies and procedures every business even shows have them

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree. I went to a taping of the Oprah show and these rules were pretty much all the same as hers. There are reasons for these rules and they don’t have anything to do with the host it’s about the taping of a TV show.

    • Agreed. Probably same for most shows with audiences.

      August 10, 2020
    • Totally agree!

      August 10, 2020
    • I agree. Every other show has similar rules..

      August 10, 2020
  • Sorry, none of those rules are it off line. Check the rules for other talk shows.

    August 9, 2020
    • The media is making Ellen to be a bad person.
Which I disagree about the whole issue.
She’s done a lot giving money and gifts like that 12 days of Christmas all these years .
      She’s a caring person .

      August 9, 2020
    • Giving ellen degeneress huge miss….no scruples, empathy or decency here…!! She shows her delight at humiliating people..preaches bullshit and lives with hypocracy and contradiction…you are not a keeper…goodbye waste of space 🤥

      August 9, 2020
    • I’ve been to the Ellen show 3 times. I love the show. I love the excitement of the audience. The rules are nothing to complain about. I’ve never seen her humiliate anyone in the audience. Now Game Of Games is a whole other subject but I’m sure the participants knew exactly what they were getting into when they signed up. #IStandByEllen

      August 11, 2020
  • I never liked Ellen Degenrous, although I do like that she has made large contributions to non-profit organizations, which is great, but she was able to do that at the expense of her employees and studio audience.

    August 9, 2020
    • Wendy Williams is worst.

      August 10, 2020
    • Why is it so important to totally destroy people these days? I don’t watch her show, but seeing the delight that people are taking in trying to wreck her life is disturbing. When did we become such a bitter, mean society?

      August 10, 2020
  • OMG really? The woman steals and Ellen is at fault? What a crock of poo. And the rules? Are you kidding me? This piece is just a hack job over absolutely nothing!

    August 9, 2020
    • People complain about everything now. But it was all good last month lol

      August 10, 2020
  • I dont see problems with any of these rules. The majority of people knows how to behave in public but there are few that dont. No chewing.gum allowed? Most definitely. Have you seen how folks chew? Boo hoo tontjose who are upset. Dont go then. There are many waiting ro take your place.

    August 9, 2020
    • Exactly, thank you. They can go to Maury Povich to heckle.

      August 9, 2020
    • Omg leave ellen alone!

      August 10, 2020
    • Im surprised that she doesn’t ban women from wearing high heeled shoes in the studio. It would make sense, considering that you are on your feet and dancing for alot of the shown

      August 10, 2020
    • I’ve actually gone to her show twice. The first time was a guest host so they let us come back a second time where Ellen was host again. I can’t speak on the allegations on Ellen personally but speaking as an audience member, the “rules” and what goes down behind the scenes are normal and actually reasonable in my opinion. Both times I had fun and the environment was very energetic. Sure that energy may not be “authentic” per se since yes, they do tell us when to clap. But it doesn’t take away from the experience at all because in the end, you’re still watching her show live and in person, seeing different celebrities getting interviewed and just being in the moment and it makes it even better knowing that you were actually one of the lucky ones to even get her tickets. If you know her show, she does hidden camera pranks all the time so it’s not out of the ordinary for her. I never felt any sort of animosity while being there so if you don’t like getting called out for doing something wrong, then simply don’t do it.

      August 10, 2020
  • These are the same rules for visiting the set of any show. And the woman who was called out loved every minute of it. Ellen sometimes has a sick sense of humor but that’s one of the reasons she is loved. Get off the wagon

    August 9, 2020
    • Do you know this person?? How do you know she loved it??? No one loves to be humiliated!! She was putting on a farse for television and Ellen im guessing!

      August 10, 2020
    • Best comment

      August 10, 2020
    • Seems very similar to the rules for other talk shows – no-one is forcing you to go.

      August 10, 2020
  • I went to an Ellen taping outdoors at Bob Hope park. It was the best time ever!! Free drinks and food plus great entertainment. Ellen is a kind ,funny person. I dont believe the controversy.

    August 9, 2020
    • I doubt the dozens of current and former workers are all making things up. Notice the lack of former employees coming out to say positive things?

      August 9, 2020
    • The rules are very fair. Nothing strict there. You’re blowing this out of proportion. Other shows have worse rules. If you don’t like it leave!! Some people work and retire at a company and never get to meet the CEO. That they see her everyday doesn’t mean that She should act like their buddy buddy. Over familiarity leads to insult. Do as you are told, take the gifts and go home. It’s the things She does that makes the show fun. You think she calls people out, try Wendy or The Red Table Talk etc… I’ll be pleased and honoured to be a guest or a staff of Ellen.

      August 10, 2020
    • I do find some problems with the shows rules. First why have a rule to demand guests participate in something that they feel uncomfortable doing. Not everyone likes dancing, some may feel awkward and anxiety dancing in front of people not to mention in front of a camera, and there is also religion issues etc. They can stand and clap and smile not made to perform that’s Ellen’s job.
Second problem is with long lines and wait time. That could be difficult for some . Almost sounds like Ellen pick and choose your audience. Discrimination??? She knows how that feels. No matter what kind it’s all the same. Rigging up a trap to catch and humiliate people is just not cool! It’s deceiveful not funny! BE KIND ELLEN !!! And by the way, guests have to dance even during commercials whats up with that?

      August 10, 2020
  • I am so disappointed in the media Ellen came out many years ago and was attacked and now here we go again with attacks she said she wasn’t perfect and she is geniune she demonstrates it so if your goal is to end her career then you will be disappointed those who genuinely care about her humanity then I am finished you have destroyed my humanity in people

    August 9, 2020
    • She never promised you a rose garden.

      August 10, 2020
    • I’m sure that Ellen is not perfect. Are you? We now live in a place where EVERYTHING is unacceptable. If she treated her employees badly, then she needs to fix that but the way you can ruin people’s lives on social media makes me sick.

      August 10, 2020
    • Hopefully, Ellen will learn something from all of this. And then use her power and influence to make things right. And then we’ll applaud her for being human and vulnerable—and we will forgive her. No one wants to dislike her, but she’s not infallible. Let’s see how she responds.

      August 10, 2020
  • Remember the Rosanne Barr massive Fan following? Then after she made that comment about the little girl online to a friend about the little girl and she got fired and lost the majority of her fans? Well that’s gonna happen to Ellen De bitch. oops I mean De generes. She already lost me as a fan. And I used to watch everything she played on. I’ll pray for her soul cuz on judgement day I would hate to be her.

    August 9, 2020
    • Roseanne Barr lost fans because of the bigotry.

      August 9, 2020
    • I was really surprised during commercials
She pretty much turns her back to the audience no interaction whatsoever. Of course your not allowed to have conversations with her anyway
Just thought it was odd and rude
Then back to live and a totally different person
So disappointed. I love Ellen just surprised by all the odd moments

      August 9, 2020
    • Now that’s mean saying you wouldn’t want to be Ellen on Judgment Day.

      August 10, 2020
    • I know that’s right

      August 10, 2020
    • You and the rest of you that don’t want to call what the guest did was Stealing, because that term guest doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to take whatever you want to from your host, stealing from each other is one of the few things that we can all agree is wrong.
But snarky people will always blame someone who has more than them….such as……

      August 10, 2020
    • I don’t see anything wrong with the rules. And also that woman who stole looked like she wa having a great time and being harassed. Ellen is not in the wrong here. People need to stop bad talking her.

      August 11, 2020
  • I understand why they wouldn’t want snacks in the audience but having to wait in line for hours could be hard if you’re diabetic because we do need snacks and water just Incase our blood sugar drops.
All the other rules sound fine there not unreasonable.

    August 9, 2020
    • I’ve only been to one taping of a different show. You could have drinks/ snacks in line but they had a garbage can as you enter to throw everything away finished or not (understandably).

      August 10, 2020
    • I can’t believe how blown out of proportion this is getting. Mean while thre is the biggest bully sitting in the white house. People need to get a hobby. Her style of humor isn’t anything to cry about. She’s not trying to hurt anyone. Maybe you just don’t get it….

      August 10, 2020
  • Not a huge Ellen watcher but did happen to see this show. At the time I thought it was terribly mean spirited. It is not Ellen’s job to shame people . She knows nothing about that woman and to deliberately set something up to humiliate a person is MEAN!

    August 9, 2020
    • Watched that particular show and I say that what the woman did was wrong, she was given a simple instruction to follow and she violated it she deserves to be punished and shamed because, that was an act of not being content. And the rules are same with the rules for other talk shows, go check them out, before writing rubbish about somebody, I mean in life we all have haters everybody cannot possibly like us, so if u have an issue with Ellen then that your problem, because I think she is nice and ok.

      August 10, 2020
    • 👏👏👊👊💯

      August 10, 2020
    • Well we know she is thief. I don’t care if you don’t like Ellen but I would never condone greed and theft. If you don’t want shame don’t do anything shameful.

      August 10, 2020
    • I have attended the show… everyone was nice and accommodating. We did not wait for hours to get in the studio, we were seated together, had fun dancing, and received great prizes. All the studio expectations were reasonable and expected for a show being filmed.

      August 10, 2020
  • Those rules sound perfectly reasonable. Not super strick but expected. And yes the one that took more than one item was selfish. I do understand that Ellen is not as what she seems but the stuff discussed in the article were all normal show hosting stuff and no one should be greedy and take more than one item that was given to them for free.

    August 9, 2020
  • I have been to her tapping twice and it was very fun show, please those rules as all the shows that I have been to. Plus it was the Christmas giveaway and I got gifts worth over $7000. We weren’t forced to laugh or dance it was a fun place to be.

    August 9, 2020
  • Boycott this crazy lunatic! She don’t deserve special treatment! She’s a big disgrace & doesn’t deserve to stay on TV prodcast! She’s one mean sour cookie! I believe she’ll pay hush hush money to the person’s that will cover for her! Of course they’ll get people to put positive messages about her, but they’ll make up names and make you think it’s just a normal person! Cover your crap! Goes along way Ellen! You are done! History! Go away don’t come back anymore!

    August 9, 2020
  • I wouldn’t waste my time seeing her, some rules are stupid, so someone who’s diabetic can’t have a snack with them that’s wrong

    August 9, 2020
  • Not what we experienced. We had a blast and Ellen seemed very nice. This is wrong.

    August 9, 2020
  • Boy we are living in a hate society! Everyone is piling up on Ellen. What has happened to us? All the studio rules printed are standard except for the required dancing. I’ve been to The View and Live with Kelly and Ryan. It’s pretty standard requirements. Come on America find your kindness and compassion again. Imagine the number of people you may knowingly or unknowingly offended throughout your life and suddenly you are being called out publicly.

    August 9, 2020
  • I believe that it’s not my place to judge anyone. I certainly would not do so based on hearsay . I do see that Ellen is a successful , outspoken woman, and perhaps some of this shitstorm relates to the right trying to trash her because she speaks out about issue. Hell, who knows ?
As long as I have not had direct experience I’m in no position to assume anything. Also I think the rules of being a guest are just normal . What’s the fuss? I don’t like how Andy gets treated but that may just be shtick – on the other hand, if Ellen is all about kindness maybe be kind to him too.

    August 9, 2020
  • Sounds like people are meeting the REAL Ellen. You can’t hide your true personality and all these people can’t be lying about her now can they??

    August 9, 2020
  • Went to a taping about 10 years ago and they move everyone so the first two rows are all young and pretty girls. We were seated early on and witnessed a girl being sat with her father in the second row. You could see the terror in the eyes of the PAs who had to scramble and get her dad moved to a row near the back and try to mitigate the confusion of the poor girl who was sat with strangers.

    August 9, 2020
  • I attended a taping of the Ellen DeGeneres show back when it was a sitcom. I will admit that my Uncle employed the cousin of Joely Fisher, so I had an “in” but Ellen was funny, kind, engaged in her audience and DID IN FACT sign autographs (I personally still have my personally autographed “Ellen” t-shirt). It was one of the coolest experiences of a lifetime…. ELLEN ROCKS!!!!! Leave her alone and stop being so angry and mean!

    August 9, 2020
  • I don’t see anything wrong with these rules. Imagine if anyone can’t go up to get autographs or give her a personal gift without prescreening. It’s for safety purposes and to stay on the agenda as production schedule and cost can’t be cheap. They did say if you take more than one you might get called out. I think Ellen is trying to get people to chill and not take things too seriously, to be able to laugh at ourselves. I’m sure she may cross the line from time to time, just like Kathy Griffin says she does during her interview with Ellen. But overall I think overall she’s just trying to get people to have fun and be happy. She does give generous giveaways and help random people get noticed.frol social media. She’s not all bad. She’s only human, remember that.

    August 9, 2020
  • I attended Ellen show and everything was fine. All the rules and regulations are the same as any other show you are attending taping of. The waiting area was in a covered area with seats. Had a great time, would go again if i could get tickets

    August 9, 2020
  • I would never waste my time watching or attending an. EdG show. If she was half as good as her ego allows her to believe I would consider her to be human. Obviously that is not a possibility. I consider her a pompous a$$. Dogs & fleas & ticks = her friendship with Jerry Epstein.

    August 9, 2020
  • She could have had staff speak to the woman. Instead she gets her mean on and humiliated her in front of millions. What a bitch. But now she cries in her mansion. Total hypocrite and phony. Ask her staff whom she bullies. Don’t look her in the eye? Wow.

    August 9, 2020
  • I stopped watching her show when she constantly played icky games with people and she took such pleasure in seeing them humiliated.

    August 9, 2020
  • These rules aren’t any different than any other live taping. There is always someone telling you when to applaud. They keep it cold for all the equipment. Food and gum is never allowed for obvious reasons. Ellen is a human bring and I’m sure has her bad days. Does she really have to be nice ALL of the time? As far as the woman who STOLE, if she didn’t like the obvious attempt at humor which I’m sure the rest of the audience found funny, she should have left. Or better yet followed the rules.
Ellen is an entertainer. And she does that well. Many of these people in the business are not always nice from producers all the way down the line. If you don’t like it, quit. Or don’t come to the show. There are just as many people that do like working with her.

    August 9, 2020
  • I’m not a fan of her scaring the crap out of people, then laughing. And, I think a lot of her laughs come at someone’s expense-I just don’t find that humorous- like her show that’s on in the evening.

    August 9, 2020
  • I love Ellen. I could NEVER see her being intentionally mean. I do believe though that its part of her humor, with no malice intent. Ellen is hilarious!

    August 9, 2020
  • WOW. I used to be a fan of Ellen. I am beyond disappointed. With your power of influence and change for the better good, SHAME ON YOU.

    August 9, 2020
  • Ellen’s brand of humor is based on laughing at and humiliating other people. Ellen sets up elaborate situations whether it’s an audience member, guest or employee and proceeds to force them to be the butt of her joke. Her game show is even more extreme. Here she can literally pull a lever and catapult people into buckets of slime. I’ve never been a fan.

    August 9, 2020
  • hmmm– i dont think this has to do with any sexual orientation issues. she seems like a phony. it’s clear there’s something mean under the kind facade, watch her micro-expressions when she tricks people or calls them out for her alleged slights. It’s not just mischief. She’s gross.

    August 9, 2020
  • I was lucky to be in the audience twice during Season 1. The show was fun, fresh and radiated positivity. Everybody had a great time–I got to sit in the front row with my hubby. Yes, we had to line up early, but it was worth the wait. It was the Mother’s Day show so we got some wonderful gifts. The dancing was loads of fun as well. I’ll admit there weren’t as many rules when I was on, such as needing to know the lyrics to the top pop songs, or having to invent dance moves and everybody in the row does the same thing. That wasn’t required. At the time, Ellen didn’t have the games so she didn’t select audience members to participate. These things were added later. Ellen did have the “Riff Raff” room back then. That was for overflow audience members since the show was filmed in a much smaller venue. Yes, there’s a Production Assistant who warms up the audience, but there was already so much excitement once we got seated, so he didn’t have to do much. I’m so grateful for my chance to be in the audience twice. Since then, things have changed on the show–the Riff Raff room disappeared once her show was filmed in a bigger studio, etc. I used to look forward to watching her show on TV for many years.

By the way, the studio is cold because the lights used in the studio are large and super hot. There’s a lot of cameras, cables and electrical equipment. We were told to bundle up, so everybody who came was prepared. I’m sure the rules are similar for other TV shows–I know they were similar for Jay Leno when he hosted The Tonight Show. We missed getting into his audience by 5 people.

It is very sad and disappointing to hear Ellen’s show is a toxic workplace for her employees. The PRs we encountered seemed to really enjoy working for Ellen. On the show in Season 1 she was funny, warm and so lovable. It was truly a joyous experience. She was super nice to her guests as well. I remember leaving her show feeling high on the energy and positivity. It was an unforgettable experience. But the show was new and fresh back then. Now it’s 16 years later.

It is disappointing to hear how Ellen has changed (maybe she was always like this) and hearing about the mistreatment of her employees and certain guests on her show. The worse for me is firing the autistic janitor just for saying “hi” to her because my child is autistic. Her public persona is quite different from the private persona and she fooled a lot of folks for many years, myself included. I honestly thought Ellen was a kind, generous, positive woman with a heart of gold but she turned out to be a mean, power-hungry bully who mistreats her employees and people she considers below her level. It appears she’s only nice to A-listers and the rich and powerful. Fame, money & power really changed her into a monster.

    August 9, 2020
  • I was in the audience at the ELLEN show , sure there’s rules we all have rules. Anyway I had a fantastic time. Waiting for my next fantastic time. At a girl ELLEN.

    August 9, 2020
  • Audience member should of only took one item. In my book taking more than your supposed to is a thief and greedy. The rules are not crazy they are standard for most every show. Ellen is a good woman who has helped people through out her career.

    August 9, 2020
  • Just a sorry case of fame , money and arrogance. Ellen was a humble funny person when she began her comedic career. She lost a lot when she came out but then turned it around. She doesn’t care now. By her own admission , she is rich and doesn’t need accolades or awards. She is 62 now and her career is over. There will be other young comedians to replace her. She has outlived her “ Relatable” self.

    August 9, 2020
  • I was in the audience at an Ellen show. I went from being a huge fan to not a fan. There was no dancing (apparently her back was hurting) and she didn’t engage with the audience at all. It was like she couldn’t care less. I left feeling super disappointed. 🤣

    August 9, 2020
  • After numerous attempts to get tickets to Ellen I was overjoyed when an employee called. Our taping was the Monday after the Thanksgiving weekend 2013. My husband & I drove our camper from Arizona for a long weekend, we found a campsite within 30 minutes to studio. We arrived early – our seating numbers were 31 & 32. We were told we could NOT sit at the row end and was directed to the seats by the wall or the center area. Not wanting to cause a comotion we opted for the center where I realized too late that my view was blocked by the cameras. Ellen was in a mood…either hungover, angry, tired, bored or all of the above. We were told a band segment (no one ever heard of) had taped earlier but to clap as tho we just saw them. All in all the most disappointing experience of my life-total waste of time & money. Don’t think I ever watched her show after that. Sorry Ellen but I think you ARE a bully (be kind just a phrase) and you reap what you sow.

    August 9, 2020
  • I’ve been on the show twice… Once for the 12 days of giveaways. It was an amazing experience…. Nothing like you are saying here.

    August 9, 2020
  • Lesson learned. Take one you’ve been told. You take more. It’s call VICE. There are consequences when one doesn’t follow the roles. I bet she will always remember this lesson and will never take more anymore.

    August 9, 2020
  • Nothing about these rules is unusual! I’ve been an audience member at 2 popular late night show tapings and the rules were EXACTLY the same. And we also waited outside for a long time, then in a crowded room inside, before entering the studio.

    August 9, 2020
  • No one is perfect, No one….
