‘Big Little Lies’: The best TV soundtracks for a rainy day
While definitely underestimated, the music on TV shows is just as key to its success as every other aspect is. Music can build up emotion, help carry a moment and connect two scenes together through musical motifs. Music makes the world go around and makes the world of TV what it is.
Besides, music is sometimes just what you need to help you get through a bad day. Turning to the music from your favorite TV show is just what you need to get you through a rough day, or even just to dance around to when you’re stuck inside all day. We know you have your top picks for TV soundtracks, but we have some great suggestions as well.
Big Little Lies
The drama of Monterey Bay wouldn’t be the same without a killer soundtrack underneath. Music supervisor Susan Jacobs won the first Emmy for music supervision and she truly deserved it. Big Little Lies has five completely different women coming together to help one of their own, and the soundtrack truly reflects that.
Game of Thrones
We’re not going to talk about the final season besides For the Throne. For the Throne was an album commissioned by HBO of a variety of artists writing music inspired by Game of Thrones. Whether you liked the last season or not, you’ll love the album featuring SZA, the Lumineers, James Arthur, and Lil Peep basing songs on the pop culture phenomenon.
Freaks and Geeks
Talk about capturing a feeling in a playlist. Freaks and Geeks may have only lasted a season, but the music is timeless. So many young adults probably learned about Van Halen, Joan Jett, and Lynyrd Skynyrd from Freaks and Geeks. Even though the music was played in short little bursts, it helped capture the setting of high school.
Stranger Things
We already wrote about how the music in Stranger Things slaps and is key to the show, what more do you need to jam out to some 80s hits? Stranger Things has gotten flack in recent years for being an easy cash-in on the 80s aesthetic, but the show is undeniably fun and the song choices that showrunners the Duffer brothers make are right on point. If this is a cash-in, count us in.
Orphan Black
Out of everything on this list, Orphan Black easily ends up with the most amount of rock music. If you really need a good dance session with your clones, or by yourself, if you don’t have clones, Orphan Black has you covered.
Pose
Ok, this soundtrack is mostly just “Vogue” by Madonna. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t some great pop music of the 80s and 90s to jam out to. Looking for Donna Summer or Janet Jackson? Diana Ross or Paula Abdul? Pose knows what you want and can give you all this and more. Just make sure you make it werk when you dance it out to the Pose soundtrack.
Also be sure to check out the soundtrack for the first season of Pose, which includes classic hits like “Midas Touch” by Midnight Star and “Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan. We already miss this iconic show!
Peaky Blinders
The BBC historical drama is set in 1919, but the music definitely isn’t. With a modern-day alternative soundtrack including Arctic Monkeys, the White Stripes, and the Black Keys, you can rock out to the 21st century in the 20th. Peaky Blinders is the perfect soundtrack when you want to return to your angsty teen days.
Dear White People
Soul, funk, and R&B capture the sound of Dear White People, especially as the show focuses on the conflict between black and white students at Winchester University. The soundtrack sounds like music that would play on WU’s radio station after Samantha’s radio show.
