Is ‘Euphoria”s Cassie the most hated character on TV?

Euphoria is filled with sex, drugs, glitter, and a lot of drama. Each character from the dark series is problematic and controversial, but we can’t stop watching it. If you’ve been living under a rock then you’re probably unfamiliar with the Euphoria craze sweeping the internet including the TikTok trends and viral makeup lewks. Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) is taking center stage in season 2 and we’re struggling to cope with the tears, drama, and her betrayal. We’re going to give you a rundown on all things Euphoria and how Cassie has turned into the most hated character on TV.

*Spoilers ahead*

All the Euphoria tea

Since 2019, we’ve been hooked on Euphoria. The series follows controversial protagonist Rue Bennett (Zendaya) as she battles her addiction and personal struggles. We also see her relationship with Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer) bloom and break then reconcile but then crash and burn. (Did we mention there’s a lot of drama?) Other characters show their struggles along the way including the woman of the hour . . . Cassie. In season 1, we see Cassie struggle with her self-worth and her relationship with her former beau Chris McKay (Algee Smith) ends. Unfortunately, Cassie had to deal with having an abortion and this led to a heartbreaking moment in season 1. A lot of fans felt sympathy for her and she was originally a fan favorite for her raw performance. Season 2 opened with a drunk Cassie bumping into one of the darkest characters on TV . . . Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi). Nate was in a toxic relationship with Cassie’s best friend Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie). Luckily, Maddy saw her worth and abandoned the ship. Cassie and Nate go for a drive which has since become a viral scene shared on TikTok. (The sexual tension was intense.) Cassie ends up sleeping with Nate in a bathroom at a party with Nate’s ex Maddy on the other side of the door . . . yikes! Cassie broke girl code and Euphoria season 2 dived straight into the drama. Season 3 picks up five years later with adult consequences of prior events.

Cassie controversy

Cassie has cried A LOT this season and we’re not surprised. It’s clear she’s not coping well with her developing feelings for Nate and her guilt towards Maddy. In episode 5, we saw Rue suffering from withdrawal and calling out Cassie in front of her mom and Maddy about her affair with Nate. Even Sydney Sweeney is embracing the memes. Fans are debating online whether they love or hate Cassie and we can’t blame them. Cassie faces backlash for OnlyFans content creation. Renewed online fury described as humiliation ritual.

Season 3 Time Jump and Adult Storylines

The five-year time jump places characters post-college. Rue lands in Mexico dealing with debt. Cassie and Nate settle into suburbs life already engaged. The shift moves the show away from high-school hallways and into adult responsibilities that echo every bad decision from earlier seasons. Viewers get to watch the same impulses play out with higher stakes and fewer safety nets. The production team leaned into the contrast between teenage chaos and grown-up fallout, and the change landed with a heavier tone.

Cassie's OnlyFans and Influencer Arc

Cassie starts OnlyFans to fund wedding plans. Maddy helps build her online presence, turning their fractured friendship into a business arrangement. The move reignites old debates about Cassie’s self-worth and her willingness to trade intimacy for attention. Fans who once sympathized with her season-one struggles now argue she keeps repeating the same pattern on a bigger platform. The storyline also forces Maddy back into Cassie’s orbit, creating uneasy scenes that mix old resentment with new financial motives.

Nate and Cassie Marriage Developments

Cassie and Nate marry in season 3. Creator Sam Levinson described it as an ‘unforgettable night.’ The ceremony arrives after a rushed engagement that plays out across several episodes, complete with family tension and last-minute doubts. The wedding functions as a capstone to the season-two bathroom affair, showing how quickly private mistakes can harden into public commitments. Viewers track the couple’s suburban routine and the quiet power struggles that surface once the party ends.

Renewed Fan Backlash and 'Humiliation Ritual' Discourse

Viewers criticize repetitive humiliating scenes. Some label arc as targeted at the actress. The conversation circles back to season-two memes but now questions whether the writers are pushing Cassie’s degradation for shock value rather than character growth. Online threads track every new low point and debate whether the payoff justifies the discomfort. Sydney Sweeney has noted that the audience was always meant to turn on the character, yet the volume of criticism in season three surprised even longtime cast observers.

What’s next?

Season 3 aired April-May 2026; possible final season. Nate-Cassie wedding occurs; Maddy-Cassie dynamics shift. The season closes several long-running threads while leaving room for one more chapter if the network green-lights it. Fans who once asked whether Cassie and Nate would become an item now have a full marriage to dissect, and the question of Maddy’s next move sits at the center of any potential continuation. The show’s appetite for escalating drama remains intact, even if the characters have aged out of high school.
