The best true crime podcasts

Serial

Serial is a popular podcast that’s been around since 2014. There are only three seasons so far, but the show is still active and listeners can expect to keep hearing more. It’s hosted by Sarah Koenig, a woman who knows a thing or two about investigative journalism. She narrates nonfiction stories over more than one episode until each story is complete. This is truly one of the best true crime podcasts to tune into.

As it stands today, Serial is owned by The New York Times. It can be streamed on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Pandora. The official website for this particular show also features clickable episodes making it easier for listeners to get listening. As of now, this podcast is the top Google search result for true crime podcasts which speaks volumes.

My Favorite Murder

There’s a reason My Favorite Murder is considered one of the best true crime podcasts. This show includes the perfect mix of humor & darkness since two hilarious comedians are in charge of getting the messages across. Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark know how to get an audience laughing, but they also know how to explain the gory details of a serial killer’s activities.

The first episode of My Favorite Murder premiered in January of 2016 and by April of 2018, the show was peaking in the #3 spot of iTunes Podcast charts. This show was nominated for the Shorty Award for Best Podcast and although it didn’t win, it probably should have. Here’s where you can check it out for yourself: Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and Player FM.

Crime Junkie

Tune into the Crime Junkie podcast if you really feel like you’re a crime junkie because this podcast has all the goods. After debuting in December of 2017, this show has stayed at the top of the charts for being massively popular amongst audiences. Over 500 million downloads have come from this epic show as well as 630 stories. The show’s hosts have donated $643,000 to charity from the funds they’ve earned so far.

Ashley Flowers is the first host and despite her ultra-busy lifestyle, she still takes the time to make sure Crime Junkies is a great podcast. She’s the founder & CEO of Audiochuck and she once worked for the University of Notre Dame as a genetics researcher. She’s obviously got some brains! Her podcast bio reveals her interests in hot yoga & hiking but her true crime knowledge is where she really shines.

Brit Prawat is the second host of Crime Junkies and she grew to love the subject of true crime after growing up watching a certain style of TV show. Her favorites include Forensic Files & America’s Most Wanted. Seeing justice get served is clearly something she cares about a lot! She makes the Crime Junkies podcast so much more entertaining with her opinions & thoughts.
