MTV VMAs: Who’s been nominated for these awards?
The MTV VMAs have released this year’s nominations and it’s clear that each nominee is going up against 2021’s creme de la creme of pop. From TikTok’s beloved rising star Olivia Rodrigo to seven-time VMA winner Megan Thee Stallion, no one can predict who will be taking home the awards this year.
MTV has also included pop music staples such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift. The VMAs’ musical categories have also been altered to ensure each award classification is completely gender neutral. Instead, keep an eye out for categories such as Best Hip-Hop, Best Alternative, and even Best K-pop.
Artists with the most MTV VMAs nominations
“Peaches” singer and long-time pop veteran Justin Bieber holds a hefty seven nominations across the board. However, he’s not the only one leading the pack. Rap icon Megan Thee Stallion is also nominated for seven awards at this year’s MTV VMAs. Bold doesn’t even begin to cut it when describing her hit track “WAP” which also makes up the majority of her nominations.
Plenty of artists aren’t far behind the two leads. Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon, Lil Nas X, and first-time nominee Olivia Rodrigo have all been nominated five times. Each name has made 2021 their year such as BTS’s numerous hits like “Butter” and “Permission to Dance”. Meanwhile, Doja Cat has too many 2021 hit tracks we won’t even bother listing them. Let’s just say her new album Planet Her has no skips required.
When & Where will the MTV VMAs take place?
The MTV Video Music Awards are set to air live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on September 12th. Make sure to tune in at 8 p.m. ET. The 2020 MTV VMAs were also set to take place at the Barclays Center in New York. However, due to pandemic protocols, the show was relocated to numerous locations across New York City.
As of now, the Barclays Center is requiring that all audience members over four years old should be either fully vaccinated or able to show a negative COVID-19 test result. Additionally, all fans must wear a mask for the duration of the show unless eating or drinking. A mask is required even if you’re fully vaccinated.
