Could we see a ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ season 4? Why we need it
No family is perfect and the Hammonds proved that with each season of Santa Clarita Diet. After three seasons of laughter, this Netflix Original proved to be one of the best in recent years. It’s hard to imagine any show achieving excellence with zombies as their focus (The Walking Dead and all its spinoffs that never end).
Since the unfortunate and unforeseen cancelation of Santa Clarita Diet, we’re left wondering about the loss of a potential season 4. What could’ve happened to our beloved characters? What about Mr. Ball Legs? Let’s find out.

An undead marriage
Netflix Original Santa Clarita Diet was released in 2017. Husband Joel Hammond (Timothy Olyphant) & wife Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore) hit a snag when Sheila dies, but doesn’t actually die? That’s right, Sheila becomes a zombie and her first issue is food. Luckily, Joel assists Shelia as she tries to settle into life as an undead wife and mother.
Living in Santa Clarita, California comes with its own issues and their neighbors are certainly more than nosy. Sheila, Joel, and their daughter Abby (Liv Hewson) must attempt to keep their family’s secret and attempt to feed the hungry zombie they live with.

An undead show?
In a recent interview with LADBible, Santa Clarita Diet’s creator Victor Fresco. Continuing the story is “something I think we all would want to do if everyone was available. Emotionally, everyone on the show would love to do some kind of closure.” Leaving Santa Clarita Diet with a cliffhanger is not the ending this dark comedy truly deserves.
With Netflix Originals being canceled left and right, it’s no surprise another beloved show was taken from us too soon. Recently, Netflix has canceled The Society and I Am Not Okay With This following COVID-19 restrictions. Santa Clarita Diet was canceled in 2019, but even in 2020 we still have hope (yes, hope) that the show can be saved.

Fresco continues and gives us all the theories about a potential season 4. “We thought it would be fun to do a season with Joel and Sheila in the same boat – what that would look like. I feel like this would be better for us and better for our fans too.” A zombie Joel? What about a zombie Abby too? A whole zombie family living out in Santa Clarita sounds like a recipe for mayhem.
“Joel could have a different attitude [to Sheila], we would want him to be a little bit different in how he approaches things. It will be interesting to see him with that unleashed and what he turns into. So not just who he kills and how he kills but what kind of person he becomes.” Things changed for Sheila when she transformed and seeing Joel undergo the same transition could lead to some epic storylines in season 4.

Loyal fans
Ever since its debut in 2017, Santa Clarita Diet has amassed a loyal & dedicated fanbase. Victor Fresco discussed how the fans reacted to news of a cancelation and no sign of a season 4 in sight.
“There were online petitions. Hundreds of thousands of people signed. I felt badly because your job as a writer is to get people invested in your show emotionally. We did that and then the rug was pulled from under them. It was a hard thing to process,” he said.

We must admit, when Santa Clarita Diet was canceled, everyone felt shook by the news. We wouldn’t get to see what happens to the Hammonds? What’s actually going on in their town? Many questions have remained unanswered so it makes sense the fans want a proper conclusion.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it appears Santa Clarita Diet season 4 is off the cards for a while, but hearing Fresco’s plans sparks hope in its fanbase. Let’s bring back a zombie show we all can stomach.
