Reenter the world of ‘The Purge’ by watching all these movies
The concept of The Purge movies has always been so thought-provoking & fascinating. For one twelve-hour period out of every year, everyone in the United States is allowed to commit any crimes that they want to commit without any repercussions. The police, firefighters, and all medical personnel are off duty meaning that it’s a total free-for-all.
On purge day, people are allowed to steal, rape, murder, and do whatever other crazy things they might want to do. Between 7 pm & 7 am, businesses can be broken into, people can be slaughtered, and everything in the path of purgers can be destroyed. The movie franchise has been a total success so far with four epic movies in existence and another one on the way.
The Purge (2013)
In 2013, The Purge premiered, giving audiences a small peek into what purge night might look like from the home of one family in particular. James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawke, is the inventor of a housing barricade that supposedly keeps his home totally safe on purge nights.
Unfortunately, it turns out the barricade he’s created is nothing more than a deterrent. Vicious intruders do everything they can to break into his home in order to murder James & his family. James’s daughter has a boyfriend who also would like to see James dead, adding more of a complexity to the storyline.
The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
The Purge: Anarchy premiered in 2014 and focuses on a vigilante by the name of Leo. He’s a former military sergeant who sadly lost his son after a negligent drunk driving accident.
Leo waits for purge night to arrive so he can seek revenge on the drunk driver, but while he’s on his way to get his vengeance, he ends up coming across four individuals who need help. He realizes it’s more important for him to protect the lives of these innocent strangers rather than to prioritize his mission of vengeance.
The Purge: Election Year (2016)
The Purge: Election Year premiered in 2016. The storyline follows a woman in political power who’s running to become the next senator. When she was a teenager, her family was tied up & attacked by a murderer on purge night and she was the only one in her family to survive.
Now that she’s older, she’s decided that she wants to make a real change and stop the purge from happening forever. Other government officials aren’t happy with her ideologies so they use the upcoming purge night to hunt her down.
The First Purge (2018)
The First Purge premiered in 2018 and tells the story of what the very first purge night was like. Purging is introduced to American society as a way to help the crime rate drop down during the rest of the year. It’s also seen as a way to minimize homelessness & poverty.
Different communities have to figure out if the purge is something that they want to participate in or if they’d rather hide out for the night to maintain their own safety. Some of the actors in this movie include Marisa Tomei, Y’Lan Noel, and Lex Scott Davis.
The Forever Purge (2021)
The Forever Purge is the upcoming 2021 Purge movie that will be released this summer. An official trailer has not yet been released but what we do know is that the cast will include Ana de la Reguera, Josh Lucas, Leven Rambin, and Will Patton.
Sadly, this fifth movie will also be the final movie . . . even though fans of this franchise were hoping to see many more installments. Maybe filmmakers will change their mind and realize how beloved this franchise is. We’d love to see them continue to create more Purge movies that follow this enticing theme for years to come.
