‘Old Guard 2’: What can we expect from the Charlize Theron sequel?

Their immortal story has only begun. Charlize Theron announced yesterday that the popular Netflix original film The Old Guard is getting a sequel. The script for the film has been written and filming is set to begin in early 2022, according to Theron, making this a blockbuster worth waiting for.

The Old Guard 2 will continue the story of these powerful immortals as new friends find their place in the group and old friends reappear to settle old scores, leading to fights that will shatter the foundation of this family forever. In short, this is going to be the next big summer blockbuster.

Of course, Twitter is already abuzz with excitement over the announcement and the news of this new franchise. We swung our way through the threads to find more information and the best reactions to The Old Guard 2. Grab your axes and dive into the latest news about The Old Guard 2.

A pandemic phenomenon

The Old Guard is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez. The story follows a group of immortal beings who try to help humanity while staying hidden, only to be outed in contemporary times. The film took a similar story, but with the additions of a new character in the form of Nile and an evil government syndicate who wants to unlock their immortal secrets any way they can.

The film debuted on Netflix on July 10th, 2020 with director Gina Prince-Bythewood stating at the time that a sequel was a possibility depending on the success of the first film. With 78 million views under its belt four weeks after the initial July release, it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced for such an action packed film.

The film is set for a 2023 release as long as no delays occur, with many speculating that Netflix will try to recapture the same magic the original captured during the pandemic by having the film debut in the summer and have it join the ranks of the many summer blockbusters slated for that summer.

Score to settle

The Old Guard 2, many speculate, will pick up from where the original left off, with our intrepid set of immortals trying to help the world while also facing their pasts, as Andy faces off against Ngô Thanh Vân’s Quynh, who has now emerged after years stuck inside the ocean in an iron maiden.

Theron will be returning as Andy and has confirmed that the fan favorite couple, Joe and Nicky, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli respectively, will be returning for the sequel.

“Oh, yeah! They’re definitely there,” Theron told Variety yesterday. With incredible actors like these and an action packed plot, this franchise looks like it’s going to swing its way into stardom on Netflix.

Twitter is ready to go

Twitter, of course, is pumped after hearing the announcement of The Old Guard 2. Reactions to the news of a sequel include:

We definitely believe in Netflix and the cast to deliver a sequel everyone can be proud of.

We all need to see that . . . .

They only announced it yesterday, you’re fine.

We also can’t wait to see this sweet couple again!

Protective Nicky is always a win.
