Guardians of the Galaxy: Watch Marvel on Netflix while you can
It’s the end of an era. Once Ant-Man and the Wasp ends its theatrical run it’ll be making its way over to Netflix for fans to stream in the comfort of their own superhero lair. But it’ll also be the final Marvel Studios movie to land on Netflix.
The New York Times reported that starting with Captain Marvel, all Disney movies (including every Marvel Studios title) will land on Disney’s own streaming platform and swerve Netflix altogether.
The good news is that Disney has no plans to remove the Netflix Originals Marvel shows from the platform anytime soon (but never say never) and there are still several Marvel properties that Netflix has streaming rights to, meaning the movies should stay on the platform for a while longer yet.
If you want to get your Marvel fix on Netflix before the Mouse House creeps in and takes all it can for its own, then here are all the current Marvel canon properties you can still watch on Netflix right now.
Thor: Ragnarok
Easily our favorite MCU movie in a while, Taika Waititi’s humorous, pulpy take on the Marvel canon is an uproarious buddy movie between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
It also features the best supporting cast of any MCU movie, with Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Idris Elba, and the indomitable Cate Blanchett all showing up and showing out.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
James Gunn’s sequel is by no means as raucously fun or original as the first film, but it’s still a solid blast of entertaining popcorn fodder, with Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff joining Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista for the anarchic sojourn across the universe.
Doctor Strange
Is it okay to say that Doctor Strange is the weakest Marvel movie released so far? We don’t care much either way because it’s the painful truth.
Though the film boasts some trippy and audacious special effects, Benedict Cumberbatch’s American accent as the titular character is an abomination and makes the whole thing difficult to watch. Still, at least it looks nice.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
You’re seriously going to want to bingewatch all five seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. while you still can and celebrate how this scrappy underdog of a show has managed to repeatedly survive cancellation.
Plus, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) – we hardly knew ye.
Luke Cage
Cheo Hodari Coker’s take on Harlem’s hero has thus far offered up two solid seasons’ worth of plays for power, inspiring speeches, and unexpectedly spectacular musical performances.
Mike Colter plays the bulletproof hero with a mesmerizing sense of swagger, while a strong supporting cast including Simone Missick, Alfre Woodard, Theo Rossi, Rosario Dawson, and Gabrielle Dennis makes this show one of the best of the MCU.
Jessica Jones
S1 of this feminist superhero yarn is a near-perfect interrogation of rape culture and PTSD, with Krysten Ritter and David Tennant providing some of the best performances of their careers to date.
The second season is nowhere near as good, but still worthwhile if just to see Trish’s (Rachael Taylor) long lost career as a teenage pop star brought into sharp, harrowing, and occasionally hilarious focus. That’s sadly the best we can say about it, really.
The Punisher
Frank Castle is one of the most compelling and complex antiheroes of all time and Jon Bernthal really brings the character to life in gruff and emotional ways.
We could have done without Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) being involved in the whole thing, but it still makes for an electric viewing experience with some sharp commentary about the treatment of army veterans and post-traumatic stress.
Daredevil
The devil of Hell’s Kitchen was the first hero to have his Netflix Originals show and it still holds up as being one of the best.
Charlie Cox has developed the character incredibly well over two gripping seasons and we can’t wait to see what the upcoming third season has in store for us (especially after the explosive ending of The Defenders).
Iron Fist
By this point we’re all aware of what a hot mess the first season of this show is. But having seen Danny Rand (Finn Jones) showing up with a complete overhaul of character in S2 of Luke Cage, we’re hopeful S2 of Iron Fist will more than make up for it.
The Defenders
It’s Luke, Matt, Jessica, and Danny all meeting up as one for the first time and battling The Hand together! Sigourney Weaver plays a villain in it! And yet, it’s just okay.
The Defenders should be one of the best shows on the streaming service, but instead it’s a stacked plate of meh with a side dish of oh lawd, won’t somebody please shut Danny up.
