The Turning: All the best horror projects in the pipeline
Listen up horror junkies, because we’ve got a tasty fix lined up for you. This week writer-director Jordan Peele announced his follow-up film to Get Out and basically, it sounds like it’s going to be the shit. But this isn’t the only promising genre flick floating about in the horror-film pipeline. On the contrary, a whole host of major players in the horrorsphere are conjuring up exciting new projects as we speak – to get your bloodthirst stirring, here’s everything we know about said projects so far.
Jordan Peele’s Get Out follow up
Peele’s Oscar-winning debut Get Out was a wild success, garnering worldwide critical acclaim for its winning combination of pure terror, a unique storyline, and an intelligent commentary tackling systemic racism. Which is why we’re stoked to hear he’ll be returning with a follow up to the movie called Us. There aren’t a huge number of details out at the time of writing, but what we do know is very promising – according to Variety, Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Winston Duke (Black Panther) are all in talks for lead roles. Peele, Get Out-esque horror, and three outstanding talents? Us in only an idea at this point and it already sounds ?. Keep your eyes Peeled (sorry, we had to) for more details to come.
Hereditary director and A24 to work on new horror film
The long-awaited Hereditary by Ari Aster (Munchausen)hasn’t even had a chance to terrify audiences with its theatrical release yet and already A24 has announced it will team up with the director for another horror project. For those who didn’t hear the very loud buzz upon its arrival on this year’s festival circuit, Hereditary is a macabre exploration into a family suffering from a fate worse than death as they try to escape the dark curse they’ve inherited. The trailer alone looks shit scary, so we have high hopes for this one, as do we for their next project.
Titled Midsomer, Asari has already written the script, with plans to shoot late summer or early fall – these guys don’t fuck about. Per The Hollywood Reporter, “The story centers on a young woman, already dealing with the death of her parents, who joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to Sweden, specifically to a remote town with unique midsummer traditions. Things go south from there.” We can’t wait for this one!
Sony’s Screen Gems buys rights for exorcism horror movie franchise
It looks like Sony’s Screen Gems has big plans on creating its very own horror movie exorcism franchise, having just bought the life rights to the late Father Gabriele Amorth – the Italian priest who performed “tens of thousands of exorcisms” for the Vatican – as well as the rights to Amorth’s two best-selling memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories. As Deadline pointed out, this gives Screen Germs the perfect foundation to build a truly legendary genre franchise. “These thrillers work best when they are based on real stories, as evidenced by The Amityville Horror, The Haunting in Connecticut, and The Conjuring and its hit spinoffs that are based on the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren.” The power of Christ compels you (to keep an eye out for more details to come)!
The Turning gets release date
Universal recently announced its upcoming haunted house thriller The Turning will be hitting theaters next February. Directed by Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg (Ready Player One), the movie is a modern adaptation of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, about a nanny who oversees two distributed orphans who are harboring dark secrets at an estate in Maine. It’s an exciting premise so far, one that’s turned out to be a fruitful one for star Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). He might be a minor, but it’s rumored he’s gonna be making bank in the region of $150k for his role in the film, with another $50k if the movie hauls in $50 million and another $125k if revenues hit $70 million. Kids these days, don’t know how lucky they are!
