The final frontier: Go to outer space with these sci-fi movies

Post-apocalyptic wastelands & earthbound dystopias aside, sci-fi movies can help satisfy our fascination with space. There’s so much unknown about space and other planets, so sci-fi that’s set in space offers a taste of the fantasy that could be.

There are so many great space movies that have been made. Some are decades old and some are quite new. This shows that people love to imagine what space is like and how life could be on other planets, exploring universes that are only possible to experience on the page or the silver screen.

Here are some of the best sci-fi movies that deal with space.

Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan films are always great to watch, and Interstellar is no different. In this movie, humans must go to outer space to survive. A team of astronauts & scientists have to travel back in time in space to save humanity.

Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, David Oyelowo, Wes Bentley, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine star in this film.

Interstellar is filled with suspense. This is one of the best space movies and has black holes, robots, conflicting timelines, and more.

WALL-E (2008)

Not all space movies are live. Some are animated, like Walt Disney’s WALL-E.

In this film, humans left Earth. Trash compactor robots have a job to clean up the planet so humans can go back one day. However, only one robot remains, and his name is WALL-E. WALL-E developed a personality over his hundreds of years on Earth.

Another robot, EVE, lands on Earth to scan the planet. The two end up going on an adventure together through the galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the space movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows the story of a group of thieves & bounty hunters who want to steal a powerful space rock.

This isn’t an ordinary team, though. There are quite a few main characters, and some of them include a sassy raccoon and a tree who can talk. For those who love humor, adventure, and the bizarre, Guardians of the Galaxy could be a perfect fit.

Treasure Planet (2002)

Treasure Planet is one of Disney’s best animated space movies. A boy discovers a treasure map to a pirate trove and goes on an intergalactic treasure hunt.

Some space movies have a lot of adult themes or are just too scary for young kids, but Treasure Planet is perfect for people of all ages.

Solaris (2002)

Steven Soderbergh’s Solaris is a 2002 remake of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris film from 1972. In this sci-fi film, George Clooney plays a psychologist who goes to investigate a space station where crew members won’t go home.
