The first trailer for 'The Hitman's Bodyguard 2' has arrived in a hail of gunfire and Britney Spears. Here's what to expect of the sequel.

Ryan Reynolds returns in ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2’: See the first trailer

We have to admit that out of all of Ryan Reynolds’s body of work The Hitman’s Bodyguard getting a sequel is definitely a surprise. It’s just not a film you would expect to get a sequel. Still the excellent double act of Reynolds & Samuel L Jackson is just too full of comedic possibility to ignore, we suppose. Anyway, The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2, titled The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, released its trailer.

Filming for The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 took place back in 2019. Due to COVID, however, the release date was pushed back to 2021. Isn’t that always the story with films released this year, huh? If you’re curious about what to expect from the sequel, here’s everything you need to know.

What is The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 about?

Top bodyguard in the world Michael Bryce (Reynolds) is not psychologically okay after the events of the first film. Apparently, his time bodyguarding hitman Darius Kincaid (Jackson) left their scars on him. So, at the behest of his therapist, Bryce takes a sabbatical from bodyguarding, goes somewhere warm & sunny, and reads that book your MLM aunt reads in her spare time, The Secret.

Unfortunately, he finds himself pulled back into Darius’s orbit when his wife Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) tracks down Bryce to help her rescue her husband, who has been kidnapped. Bryce agrees, but only if there is no bodyguarding at all. Armed with pepper spray and nearing the verge of the nervous breakdown, Michael Bryce goes to get his groove back (and possibly other international incidents to follow).

Also, Sonia really wants a baby. Which, we’re sure, is going to end well for everyone involved. We will give 1000000000000% kudos to the trailer because it uses Britney Spears seminal classic song “. . . Baby One More Time” to excellent effect. Good job, everyone! Use Britney Spears songs in more action movies, you cowards.

Who else is involved in The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2?

In addition to Reynolds, Jackson, and Hayek, Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) is set to play the villain of The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2, a mobster that is hunting them down. Jackson is reunited with his MCU co-star, Frank Grillo (Kingdom), who plays an undisclosed role in the film. Given that Deadpool 3 is taking place in the MCU, it’s sort of like an adorable Marvel reunion going on.

Rounding out the cast for The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 is Morgan Freeman (Bruce Almighty), Richard E Grant (Withnail and I), Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy), Gabriella Wright (The Tudors), and Kristofer Kamiyasu (Roslund & Hellström: Box 21). We can’t wait to see them all try to hunt each other down, blow each other up, and lead Ryan Reynolds through his mandated sabbatical/therapy.

Patrick Hughes, who directed the first film, returns to direct the sequel as well as Tom O’Connor who wrote the script for the first movie and co-wrote The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 with Brandon Murphy & Phillip Murphy.

When will The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 be released?

The current scheduled release date for The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2 is June 16th. As far as we can tell, there’s no plan by Lionsgate to release the film simultaneously on streaming. Of course, this all depends on COVID, but it looks like if you want to see the film when it comes out, then you’re going to have to go to an actual movie theatre to see it. Unless things change before then.

What do you think about The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard? Will we see Ryan Reynolds’ act out a nervous breakdown on the screen? Do you think Britney Spears songs need to appear in more action movies? Let us know in the comments below.
