“I wish her well” says Donald Trump to Ghislaine Maxwell in 2020
Donald Trump’s brief 2020 remarks about Ghislaine Maxwell still echo because they came from a man whose documented social circle once overlapped with hers and Jeffrey Epstein’s in unmistakable ways. The president told reporters he wished Maxwell well after her July 2020 arrest, then claimed he knew little about the case beyond the fact that Epstein and Maxwell had lived in Palm Beach. The answer landed awkwardly given the prior public record of shared flights, parties, and photographs.
Those connections were never secret. They surfaced again in later document releases that added fresh detail to what reporters already knew in 2020. The pattern shows repeated proximity, even if proximity alone never proved knowledge of crimes.
Photo proof
Photographs of Trump with Epstein and Maxwell circulated for years before the arrest. Some captured the three at parties; others showed Trump and Epstein with young women at Mar-a-Lago events. Trump later stated he banned Epstein from the club around October 2007 after Epstein hired spa staff and behaved inappropriately toward a member’s underage daughter. White House statements later described the decision as removing Epstein for “being a creep.” The photos remained part of the public record regardless.
Trump on Epstein in 2002
In a 2002 New York Magazine profile, Trump offered an unusually warm assessment. “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life.” The quote resurfaced often after Epstein’s 2019 arrest and has been repeatedly verified as accurate.
A party of two
Florida businessman George Houraney recalled a 1992 Mar-a-Lago event he organized at Trump’s request. Houraney flew in twenty-eight women for what was described as a calendar-girl competition. Just before the party Trump told him the only guests would be Trump and Epstein. Houraney objected that the event was meant for VIPs. The account has been corroborated in later reporting.
Mark Epstein
Jeffrey Epstein’s brother Mark confirmed in interviews that Trump flew on Epstein’s planes “numerous times.” Flight logs already showed a 1997 trip. Mark Epstein added in 2025 that the two men flew on each other’s planes and that Trump visited Epstein’s office frequently in the 1990s. Newer files released in 2025-2026 confirmed additional flights beyond the earlier public logs.
Maxwell Conviction and Appeals
Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 on five counts, including sex trafficking of a minor. She received a twenty-year sentence in June 2022. The Second Circuit rejected her appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case in October 2025. As of 2026 she remains incarcerated, with clemency the only remaining avenue for early release.
Later Epstein Files Releases and Trump Mentions
Document releases in December 2025 and January 2026 added new detail. A prosecutor’s note listed at least eight Trump flights on Epstein’s jet between 1993 and 1996, with Maxwell aboard on four of them. One 1993 flight reportedly carried only Trump and Epstein. The January 2026 batch exceeded three million pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act and included FBI interview summaries along with other references.
Updated Flight Log Details
The expanded logs showed more 1990s travel than earlier public records indicated. Several flights included Maxwell. Some carried limited passenger lists. These entries built on Mark Epstein’s earlier statements without introducing new allegations.
Trump’s Evolving Statements on Maxwell
Trump told reporters in 2025 that he had “not thought about” pardoning Maxwell. He continued to describe limited recent contact and denied knowledge of wrongdoing. The later comments came after Maxwell’s conviction and sentencing, shifting the context from the 2020 arrest remarks.
Trump’s response
The 2020 statement that he wished Maxwell well now sits against a fuller timeline. Maxwell stands convicted and sentenced; appeals are exhausted. Additional flight documentation released in 2025-2026 reinforces the documented ties that existed long before the arrest. None of the records establish that Trump knew of the crimes, yet the volume of social and travel overlap makes the claim of total unfamiliarity difficult to square with the evidence that has accumulated since 2020.
