Is Netflix dropping ‘Stranger Things’ season 4 this month? See the new teaser
Netflix puts out more original content than anyone can follow, but only a handful of their shows have had the success Stranger Things has. Created by Matt & Ross Duffer, Stranger Things first aired in 2016 and instantly became the most popular show on Netflix.
Stranger Things is billed as a science fiction horror adventure set in the 1980s. Its main characters are a group of middle school besties living in a sleepy town in Indiana. They come to realize their boring small town is actually the site of vast government conspiracies and supernatural events.
Stranger Things has launched the careers of actors like Millie Bobby Brown & Finn Wolfhard. It also features established big names like Winona Rider, and it’s made us all fall in love with David Harbour.
Now, two years have passed since fans have been able to check in with their favorite characters, and if you’re dying to know when season 4 will bring back all your favorite Stranger Things cast members, we’ve got you covered.
Extended absence
Fans have had to wait much longer than usual for Netflix to bring out a new season of Stranger Things. Season 3 aired in its entirety on July 4th, 2019. Previously, seasons had a fifteen to eighteen month gap between them. Like everything else in the world, Stranger Things had to break its routine because of coronavirus.
While fans of the show have been dealing with its absence, the new season has been gearing up to deal with some in-universe absences. The end of season three apparently showed the death of Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour). There were already signs Hopper survives his ordeal, but season 4 will definitely bring back Harbour’s popular character.
Matthew Modine’s character Dr. Martin Brenner is another potential return. Brenner is the evil scientist who oversees the experiments giving Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven her psychic powers. Brenner dies at the hands of a Demogorgon at the end of the first season, but a teaser trailer has confirmed his appearance in season 4.
New trailer
Not quite a week ago, on May 6th, Netflix put out a new trailer for Stranger Things. This is the second look at the upcoming season that Netflix has offered. The first showed David Harbour’s Hopper, sitting in snow and surrounded by Russian soldiers.
This new trailer opens with shots of children playing in a room that looks to be part of a psychiatric facility. There’s a passing reference to the 80s in the form of a Magic-8 Ball before Matthew Modine’s voice intones, “Good morning, children.” They respond, “Good morning, Papa,” using the name that Eleven called Dr. Brenner in season one.
Modine is only seen from behind, as the camera pans down a long hallway. It comes to rest on a door marked “11”. Once again Modine’s voice is heard saying, “Eleven, are you listening?” There the trailer ends.
It’s unclear if this is supposed to be a flashback, or if Brenner somehow finds a way to survive his apparent death and capture Eleven between seasons. We likely won’t know more until Stranger Things finally returns to Netflix.
Season 4 release date
While Netflix has now released two trailers for Stranger Things season 4, they’ve yet to announce a release date. Previous seasons have been released in July & October. Season 4’s production has been delayed because of the coronavirus, but it is currently filming.
The show could surprise & delight fans with a speedy production, but a July release date seems overly optimistic. October is a safer bet this time around, but we’ll all be keeping our fingers crossed that Netflix and the Stranger Things team finds a way to return us all to Hawkins, Indiana much sooner.
Members of the production team have laid out a couple of exciting hints for what to expect in the fourth season. The Duffer brothers have said that for the first time Stranger Things will be expanding to plotlines outside of Hawkins. Clearly, Russia will be included in those plots. They’ve also promised that season four will be the “scariest” season yet.
