Is James Corden getting rid of this controversial ‘Late Late Show’ segment?
While the world will always have a soft spot for the traditions of The Tonight Show, it’s obvious that James Corden and his late-night antics are trending up to new heights these days, thanks to a creative platform that allows celebrities to show the goofiest sides of themselves.
Much like Jimmy Fallon, James Corden and his Late Late Show rely on gimmicks & segments to make themselves stand out from the Jimmy Kimmel’s and Conan O’Brien’s of the world, getting their guests to partake in ridiculous stunts such as singing, dancing, or other acts of embarrassment. It’s no secret that the biggest segment on Corden’s show is “Carpool Karaoke”, where he gets singers to jam out to their biggest hits while driving.
However, while “Carpool Karaoke” has certainly landed with audiences of The Late Late Show, another popular segment of Corden’s might be trending in the wrong direction these days. Is it possibly “Sidewalk Musical”, where Cordon and a slew of celebrities perform hit broadway songs during a stoplight on a busy L.A. intersection? Well, let’s just say it’s a segment some people struggle to stomach.
The Late Late Show with James Corden
The Late Late Show, which kicked off in 1995, was first hosted by Tom Snyder and has seen a variety of different hosts since, including Craig Kilborn & Craig Ferguson before duties were officially handed over to British star James Corden in 2015. Corden’s new vision of the show went beyond simple celebrity interviews, and became a canvas for a variety of hilarious segments that highlight the personalities of Hollywood favs.
In fact, James Corden’s popularity grew so large that he began landing work outside of his late-night gig, including roles in the motion pictures Cats & The Prom. Corden was also tagged to host the much-anticipated Friends reunions on HBO Max, which saw series’ favorites such as Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry return to the famous Friends set.
Now, with years under his belt in terms of developing both his own style of late night flavor as well as an audience for it, James Corden is perhaps bigger than ever! But did all this come with a price? It certainly seems so, as one of his beloved segments has now taken a turn for the worse, sought out by cancel culture in an effort that will surely shake things up in the months to come.
Segment under fire
So which popular segments of the Late Late Show with James Corden could soon be getting axed? We are of course referring to “Spill Your Guts”, a truth or dare-like segment in which popular guests must decide whether to answer a difficult question truthfully, or eat a plate of “disgusting” food which lies in front of them. Foods in the segment have varied from bugs, to brains, to saliva, to even animal private parts.
Popular guests who have taken part in “Spill Your Guts” include the Jonas Brothers, Chef Gordon Ramsay, Chrissy Teigen, and fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. So why is this segment taking so much heat these days? Well, a viral video on TikTok has been roaming the digital airwaves, highlighting how much of the food on this segment is actually from Asia, and is disrespecting the tradition of certain cultural practices.
“Many of the foods that he presents to his guests are actually from different Asian cultures,” wrote TikTok star Kim Sairasome. “He’s presented foods such as balut, century-old eggs, and chicken feet, which are often regularly eaten by Asian people. This is literally racist.”
