Why does everyone in the UK hate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?

It turns out the beloved former royals are not so beloved in the great country of England. Besides the obvious contempt by the Royal Family, it seems that UK citizens are equally as cold towards Prince Harry & Meghan Markle. 

The exiled couple made their first appearance at a royal event in two years to be met with scathingly loud booing from the crowd. Yet, where’s all this animosity coming from? Are the people of the UK still upset with the couple’s departure from the Royal Family? Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee

If you’re not from the UK, you’re probably wondering what in the world is a “Platinum Jubilee”. Well, 2022 celebrates the Platinum Jubilee year for Her Majesty The Queen, which marks seventy years of service to the people of the United Kingdom. The celebration brings the family together once again and the masses of citizens clad in the union jack.

Despite the messiness of family drama and a tell-all interview leaving the royals scrambling, past differences were put aside to celebrate the Queen and her seventy-year reign. Except there’s one issue, the British crowd wasn’t willing to be so amicable toward Prince Harry & Meghan Markle.

First, it must be noted that the former royals were distantly sat by Prince William and his family during a church service at St. Paul’s Cathedral. To add insult to injury, as Prince Harry & Meghan Markle exited they were first met with cheers which soon were drowned out by booing from a massive crowd.

This wouldn’t be the first time the couple was met with disdain in the UK. Similar booing erupted from crowds when the pair arrived for the National Service of Thanksgiving.

Does everyone in the U.K. hate Prince Harry & Meghan Markle?

It seems the jovial celebration of the Platinum Jubilee can’t save the former royals from public opinion. Their popularity in the UK has plummeted to an all-time low, according to a new poll.

It’s been revealed that only one-third of British citizens (32%) support the Duke of Sussex and his decision to leave the Royal Family. Meanwhile, only a measly 23% hold a positive opinion of his wife, Meghan Markle. The YouGov survey reveals shockingly widespread disapproval of the couple.

Other surveys prove that Prince Harry & Meghan Markle are unwelcome. A separate survey by JL Partners reported that only 27% of British adults hold a positive opinion of Prince Harry. Again, an even lower percentage, at 22%, supports Meghan Markle. On the other hand, Queen Elizabeth stands as the most cherished and respected royal. According to YouGov’s poll, eight in ten British citizens support the monarch.

Why the animosity?

It’s clear that some people in the UK hate Prince Harry & Meghan Markle, but the real question is why? After a heartbreaking interview with Oprah Winfrey, wouldn’t the country hold some sympathy for the couple? Well, apparently not. 

The decision to leave their royal titles and abandon the throne to peacefully reside in sunny California was seen as an act of betrayal and abandonment of the Royal Family. It also seems that Markle’s American status and mixed-race were not entirely welcome by not only the Royal Family but also the British public.

In the end, Markle is blamed for the family’s split while the prince is criticized for his decision to marry Markle in the first place. It’s clear that the couple isn’t as beloved in the UK as they are in America. Hopefully, one day the couple can return to a kinder country and make amends with the Royal Family they left behind.
