‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’: How is James Gunn ending these Marvel movies?
Director James Gunn just announced today that the last in the trilogy of Guardians of the Galaxy movies will be his last project in the MCU. Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that this last installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies will also be much heavier than the previous two.
Gunn’s relationship with the MCU has been rocky since his dismissal from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, leading him to DC where he worked on the soon-to-be-released Suicide Squad reboot as well as the spin-off Peacemaker series for HBO Max. Therefore, it’s no surprise that, after finishing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn will officially depart from the MCU.
Naturally, many fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the news on the last installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. We got into hyperdrive as we flew through the threads to find more information. Get on the Milano and dive into what we know so far about Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Heavy after the holidays
Gunn told EW recently that, unlike the lighthearted Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special that will air on Disney+ in December 2022, the last official installment of the trilogy will be quite heavy for both the characters and the fans.
“For Guardians 3, the script has basically been written for a long time,” Gunn told EW, “I’ve been playing with it in little ways over the years, but it’s basically stayed the same since three years ago. It’s pretty heavy actually. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”
The heavy story that Gunn is crafting is only made heavier by the news that came alongside of this reveal: this will be Gunn’s last MCU project due to the contentious relationship between him and the company after his firing.
One last time
The Guardians franchise has helped Gunn become the household name he is today, but the relationship has not always been smooth. After the resurgence of old tweets, Gunn was dismissed from the MCU, causing him to direct for DC for a time before being hired back to complete the Guardians franchise. Many speculate that Gunn will work full-time on the DCEU due to his comments to the New York Times.
“I have no clue what I’m going to do. For me, Guardians 3 is probably the last one,” Gunn said to the New York Times “I don’t know about doing it again. I do find, because of the ability to do different stuff in the DC multiverse, it’s fun. They’re starting to really resemble their comic books. The Marvel Universe has always been a little more cohesive, and DC has always had more great single runs.”
While many are sad to see him go from the amazing trilogy, many fans of Gunn’s won’t have to wait long to see more of his work, as his optimism over his new relationship with the DCEU means that we won’t have to wait long to see more of his unique take on superheroes.

We don’t think this is a misdirect, dude, considering . . . .
I'm sure after the early reviews rolled in for @SuicideSquadWB he wouldn't find a hard time landing a project for DC

He does seem excited about working with them again, so that’s something!
Why did you have to hit me with the Kid Groot for this post? 🥺🥺

Right in the feels!
That's a shame. I would have loved to see Gunn direct a Thunderbolts movie or even show. But whatever, he wants to go to DC now. I wanted him to stay at Marvel, but eh. I'll just enjoyed his last GOTG film with Marvel.

We would have liked to see that too, but alas!
Been doing an MCU marathon the last few days and got to say, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie are two of the best movies in that franchise, you do write good and witty dialogue, I can't wait for Vol. 3, hope its as great as the first two
