Despite one immense cliffhanger, season 2 of 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' is still uncertain. See what the creator & cast have to say about season 2.

Will ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ return with a season 2?

When it first premiered in 2000, Gilmore Girls became an instant fan favorite. With 7 seasons that entertained us, we loved Rory & Lorelai Gilmore, the ineffable mother-daughter duo based in the fictional town of Stars Hollow. And while the original series ended as Rory graduated from college — the plot that started it all — we got lucky to meet our favorite characters again.

This time, thanks to the streaming giant Netflix that revived Gilmore Girls’ popularity, a four-part miniseries called Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life graced our screens in 2016. With that, we saw our favorite Gilmore women through four seasons in a year & caught up on what their life looks like now.

We met all the old characters & their quirks in new avatars — from the ever-resourceful Kirk to the pining Jess, from the clumsy Sookie to the charming Christopher. However, it was the last four words of the miniseries that left us in shock.

The infamous final four words. . . and other bothersome details

In the final scene of the series, we see Rory & Lorelai sitting in the gazebo after Lorelai & Luke have just gotten married. As they look over the familiar skyline of Stars Hollow, Rory says, “Mom? I’m pregnant.” The words seem very poetic in that the show was always about how Lorelai raised Rory independently after she got pregnant with her at the age of 16.

Now, don’t get us wrong. We love a good cliffhanger. But these words did leave room for another season that can pick it up from there. After all, we don’t even know who Rory’s baby daddy is. While many fans assume that the father is Logan, due to their affair, there has been no hint of any sort. For all we know, it could even be Paul, the boyfriend that everyone — including Rory — kept forgetting about.

That said, a second season for the revival does make sense. In fact, Ted Sarandos, the streaming giant’s co-CEO and chief content officer told the U.K. press association about the success of the series, “We hope [there are more installments]. We obviously loved the success of the show, fans loved how well it was done, it delivered what they hoped. . .”

Even the show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is open to the possibility. She chalks it up to scheduling & other such logistics, “it would just have to be the right circumstances, and that we’re all sort of in the same drunken mood together to go repaint Stars Hollow again. Because we had to repaint Stars Hollow, and we’ll have to repaint it again. But it’s definitely possible.”

Teasing the fans

The cast of the show talks about the show often in panels, interviews, and such, but no one concretely gives an answer as to the future of the show. Initially, Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai, shared that she wanted to keep these characters alive, but only in a way that makes sense, “I don’t know if there is a need to do more. I would never want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome.”

She added, “There’s probably a way to keep these characters alive, but I don’t know if that’s the best thing for them.” Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory, echoed similar sentiments, “I think for me it comes down to what story we’re telling. I’m just interested in telling a story that is dynamic and that I sort of relate to and can hook into.”

She, too, left us with an ambiguous answer as to the future as she added, “And if that happens. . . I don’t know. It’s such an unknown, I don’t think we anticipated that this would happen.” Lauren also shared that they’re never saying never & that the moment everyone gets on the same page/schedules, they’d be happy to consider it.

In the meantime, we also have to live with the knowledge that Matt Czuchry knows who the father of Rory’s baby is & we don’t.
