‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ featurette: Everything to know
Jim Henson steered his puppeteering craft into darker territory with the 1982 release of The Dark Crystal, a fantasy that left mainstream audiences cold but built a lasting cult audience over the decades.
Netflix revived that world in 2019 with the ten-episode prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which followed three young Gelflings who discovered a threat to their planet Thra and launched a rebellion against the ruling Skeksis.
The new series picked up directly from the original film’s backstory, showing the events that led to the near-extinction of the Gelflings and the fracture of the Crystal itself.

The story traced the steps that preceded the Gelfling massacre depicted in the 1982 film and explained how the Crystal Shard became separated from the larger Crystal.
At the start of the series, the Skeksis still held divine status among the inhabitants of Thra. Rian’s discovery of their true nature set the rebellion in motion, giving viewers the origin of the conflict that Jen later inherited in the original movie.
The puppet designs are exactly the same as in The Dark Crystal
The production team created roughly 110 puppets, including twenty principal characters, to maintain visual continuity with Henson’s 1982 designs. Brian and Wendy Froud returned to oversee the work, and their son Toby joined the effort, bringing experience from Laika’s stop-motion features.
Gelfling puppets required two puppeteers plus remote-control mechanisms rather than the cable systems used in the original film. The practical approach kept the tactile quality that distinguished the franchise while allowing more fluid performance in the new series.

In 2020 the series won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program, marking the first major awards recognition for a Henson Company production in that category since the 1980s.
Cancellation and Franchise Future
Netflix ended the series after its single season in September 2020. Lisa Henson later stated that the company intended to explore other storytelling avenues for Thra in response to fan interest. As of 2025, Brian Henson confirmed that the Jim Henson Company continued to develop potential film projects set in the same universe, though rights considerations with Netflix remained unresolved.
The Original Film's Enduring Legacy
The 1982 feature received a 4K restoration and re-release around 2025, introducing new audiences to the source material that Age of Resistance expanded. The prequel stayed faithful to the established geography of Thra and the established hierarchy of the Skeksis, reinforcing the original film’s place in the franchise canon.
