Former star of ABC's The Bachelor has officially come out as gay. Learn about Colton Underwood's journey that put all of Bachelor Nation on watch.

Colton Underwood: Peek at ‘The Bachelor’ star coming out on GMA

Stop the presses and jump the fences! Colton Underwood, the twenty-nine year old football player and former star of The Bachelor has officially come out as gay. Earlier this morning, Colton Underwood put the entire Bachelor Nation on watch as he sat down with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, finally ready to speak his truth, and we couldn’t be any happier for him.

Underwood was first introduced to Bachelor nation during the fourteenth season of The Bachelorette, which saw Becca Kufrin in the titular role and Underwood amongst her many suitors. After making it into Kufrin’s final four, Underwood would be sent home only to learn he himself would go on to become The Bachelor for the show’s twenty-third season.

However, it is perhaps more clear than ever as to why Underwood opted to forgo the show’s typical marriage proposal, even though he had seemingly found love with his season’s winner, Cassie Randolph. He was struggling internally with something quite difficult, and we’re so gosh darn happy that he’s now able to be all he is, without shielding the world from any secrets. Let’s delve into the full GMA interview!

“I’ve ran from myself for a long time,” Underwood shared with Roberts on GMA Wednesday morning. “I’ve hated myself for a long time. And I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”

“I’m still nervous, but yeah,” Underwood continued. “It’s been a journey for sure.” Underwood then talked about the struggles many people faced in 2020, a year ravaged by a global pandemic and multiple social & activist movements. He spoke on how it gave him time to reflect, and how he was forced to watch himself closely in the mirror and to stop running away from his fears and true identity.

The Bachelor star continued to talk about the need to take back control of his life after having some suicidal thoughts, explaining how “there was a moment in L.A. that I woke up and I didn’t think I was gonna wake up. I didn’t have the intentions of waking up. And I did.”

Roberts asks the hard question

Robin Roberts, a seasoned pro when it comes to difficult interviews, went on to ask Colton Underwood about his time as The Bachelor, and if he felt like he had misled any of the women who were there to find love. This question put Bachelor Nation on watch.

“I’ve thought a lot about this too, of, ‘Do I regret being the Bachelor and do I regret handling it the way that I did?’ I do,” Underwood explained. “I do think I could’ve handled it better, I’ll say that.” While Underwood did go on to apologize to all of the women he had let down, he did talk about how all of his experiences within the Bachelor franchise helped him get to the place he’s at today. The one time breaking hearts is OK.

Underwood concluded his interview with the following soliloquy: “I’m still the same Colton everybody met on TV. I’m still the same Colton to my friends and my family, I just happen to be able to share with people now all of me. And I am proud of that, you know? I am proud to be gay.”
