Get to know J-Hope: BTS’s main dancer and rapper
J-Hope, otherwise known as Jung Hoseok, is one-seventh of the wildly popular K-Pop boy band, BTS. Managed by Big Hit Entertainment, the group debuted onto the worldwide stage in 2013. BTS is one of the most successful music groups in the world right now, and it’s not just because of their music. The seven members of the chaotic boy band are also admired for their alarmingly good looks, daring fashion choices, and their distinct adorable personalities. J-Hope, the group’s main dancer and rapper, is a favorite of many. We know he can sing, rap, and dance, but what else do we know about J-Hope? Known for his cute-as-a-button personality, his adorable English accent, and his brave fashion choices, J-Hope dubs himself as “my hope, your hope, everybody’s hope”. There is a lot more to this overly-energetic ball of fun from South Korea than meets the eye. We’ve got the skinny on Jung Hoseok.
Life before BTS
Dancing has always been part of J-Hope’s life. Before his official debut with BTS, J-Hope was actually a member of an underground dance team called Neuron. He took dance classes at the Gwangju Music Academy, and even won himself some local and national awards for dance before BTS was even on his radar. His interest in dance carved a natural path for the young starlet into the idol life. J-Hope started working on his singing and rapping, which allowed him to audition as an idol trainee. Clearly successful, during his time as a trainee, J-Hope was featured rapping in Jo Kwon’s song “Animal” in 2012.
Solo career
On March 2, 2018, J-Hope released his very first solo project “Hope World”. The release included two major hits for J-Hope, “Airplane” and “Daydream”. The release debuted at number sixty-three on the Billboard 200 chart, and peaked in popularity at number thirty-eight. At the time, this positioned J-Hope to become the highest-ranking Korean solo artist ever. The release was such a success that it landed J-Hope the number three position on the Emerging Artists Chart. He also debuted at position ninety-seven on the Artist 100 Chart, making him the second Korean solo artist to place on that particular chart. On September 27, 2019, J-Hope dropped “Chicken Noodle Soup”, a collaboration single with American singer, Becky G. Both J-Hope and Becky G claim they bonded over the track, as both of them learned to dance to the original version of the song in their respective training. The song debuted at number eighty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and by October 4 had been streamed over 9 million times, with over 11,000 downloads. Due to this success, J-Hope became the first member of BTS to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart as a solo artist. He is currently the sixth Korean artist to rank on the same chart. The 2022 debut studio album Jack in the Box expanded his sound with tracks that mixed rock, hip-hop, and introspective lyrics, and it reached the top ten on multiple international charts. Hope on the Street Vol. 1 arrived in March 2024 while he was completing service, pairing new music with a companion documentary series that traced his dance roots. In 2025 he released the singles Sweet Dreams featuring Miguel, MONA LISA, and Killin’ It Girl, plus the collaboration Spaghetti with LE SSERAFIM; MONA LISA marked his seventh Billboard Hot 100 entry as a soloist.
Military Service
J-Hope enlisted for mandatory military service in April 2023. He served the standard term and was discharged on October 17, 2024. During that period he still managed to release Hope on the Street Vol. 1, keeping fans connected through music and a docuseries that revisited his early dance days. The service created a planned pause for every BTS member, and his discharge marked the start of a busy solo return.
Solo World Tour and Festival Appearances
J-Hope launched his first solo world tour, Hope on the Stage, in 2025. The run opened in Seoul, moved through multiple Asian cities, then crossed into North America before wrapping in June. July brought a headline slot at Lollapalooza Berlin, where he delivered a career-spanning set that mixed older hits with the newest material. The tour and festival dates gave him his largest solo stages to date and confirmed strong demand outside group activities.
Recent Music Releases and Collaborations
Post-2019 output shifted from mixtape territory into full projects and frequent single drops. Jack in the Box arrived in July 2022 as his first studio album, followed by the 2024 EP Hope on the Street Vol. 1 recorded during service. The 2025 singles Sweet Dreams, MONA LISA, and Killin’ It Girl each charted, while Spaghetti with LE SSERAFIM added a high-energy group collaboration to the catalog. These releases showed continued chart momentum and a willingness to experiment with features and production styles.
BTS Group Reunion and Future Plans
All seven BTS members finished their service obligations by June 2025. A July Weverse livestream confirmed the group would begin work on a new album and tour dates slated for 2026. The announcement shifted focus back to collective projects while leaving room for individual schedules, including J-Hope’s ongoing solo commitments.
Fashion and Brand Ambassadorships
J-Hope serves as a global brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton. The partnership spans campaigns, runway support, and creative direction for performance looks. His styling choices continue to blend streetwear with tailored pieces, extending the same playful risk-taking that fans first noticed during early BTS promotions.
Philanthropy
As a group, BTS are known for their community outreach work and philanthropic efforts. Aside from the many things he is involved in with BTS, J-Hope has also graciously extended himself to several charitable causes multiple times. In February 2018, J-Hope donated the equivalent of $89,000 USD of his own money to ChildFund Korea. This is a non-profit that provides financial, physical, and emotional support for children. This was not the first time the star had donated to ChildFund Korea, either. He donated the equivalent of $133,000 USD in 2018, but requested the donation be kept private at that time. More recently, J-Hope donated the equivalent of $84,000 USD to the Green Umbrella Children’s Fund. The donation was aimed at providing financial assistance to children in low-income households that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Later gifts included 100 million KRW each for Turkey-Syria earthquake relief through UNICEF in 2023, support for Jeju Air crash victims, and wildfire relief across Ulsan, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam regions in 2025. He also gave 200 million KRW to Seoul Asan Medical Center Children’s Hospital. Cumulative donations reached roughly 1.1 billion KRW by 2025. Apart from being a great singer, rapper, and dancer, it seems that J-Hope is a pretty stand up fella! What’s not to love?
