‘FORTUITOUS’ a Gripping True Story Premiering on VYRE Network
There’s something especially powerful about stories rooted in survival — the kind that transform pain into purpose. That’s exactly what filmmaker and author Crystal L. Bass delivers in Fortuitous, an emotionally charged new feature inspired by her own real-life experiences of wrongful conviction, betrayal, and redemption.
Premiering worldwide for free on May 15, 2026, exclusively on VYRE.TV and the VYRE App, the film delivers a reunion of actors from HBO’s acclaimed The Wire, including Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, Hassan Johnson, and Tray Chaney. The cast also includes standout performances from Clifton Powell, Shannon Ramsey Floyd, Rosalyn Gaines, Dajuan “YBS Skola” Cannady, and Melody Rodgers.

Adapted from Bass’s novel Whirlwind, the film follows Jasmine Carter, a young church girl wrongfully jailed after becoming involved with an undercover drug dealer. While incarcerated, she discovers mentorship and hope. After her release, Jasmine works to rebuild her life — only to reconnect with her prison mentor in an unexpected new role as her future mother-in-law.
“I shared my story because we are only as sick as our secrets,” Bass says. “I want people to walk away knowing that your past doesn’t disqualify you, it can actually be the very thing that propels you forward.”

A Baltimore native, Bass transformed her own painful experiences into a career as an author, entrepreneur, and now filmmaker, using storytelling to empower others to reclaim their narratives. Fortuitous marks her filmmaking debut and has already earned recognition at the Las Vegas Black Film Festival and the Prison City Film Festival, winning awards including Best Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
Its release on VYRE Network reflects the platform’s growing commitment to amplifying independent voices and bringing culturally relevant stories to wider audiences.
