‘Beautifully. Love. Dark.’ from Kevin Williams: Why you’ll want to see it

When telling a true story, you want to make sure you’re treating it with the utmost respect. Someone trusted you enough to share their story through your vision, so you have to be careful. But if you’re the one telling your own story, like Kevin Williams, it becomes much more important to treat it with respect.

Williams first film Beautifully. Love. Dark. is a true story of two key moments in the newcomer’s life. Written and directed by Williams, it was important to him to tell the story his way, so he made sure to be hands on throughout the entire process.

At a crossroads

The story of Beautifully. Love. Dark. has Williams taking on a time in his life when two paths crossed unexpectedly, leaving a huge impact on Williams as a person. One hard day on Kevin has him consoling a friend in need, and bringing up a lot of past trauma unintentionally.

At this moment, Williams has a choice. As Williams says “you wish it wasn’t a true story” thanks to how heart-wrenching and tragic it can be at times. But sometimes bringing your trauma to life is the best way to help you move past. Just look at what Honey Boy did for Shia LaBouf.

Getting involved as much as possible

There’s wearing many hats, and then there’s wearing all the hats. Along with being the director and writer, Williams also produced and acted in Beautifully. Love. Dark. Granted, his focus was playing an older version of himself in the film.

Of course, this is Williams’ passion project. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Williams wanted to be as involved as possible with the film. Telling such a personal story, he wants to make sure the right things are focused on and the audience takes away the right message at the end of the film.
