Did Paramount just confirm Tails is in the second ‘Sonic’ movie?
What can we say about Sonic? He’s one of the most iconic game characters of all time, and his relevance only deepens with age; in recent years, Sonic has moved from video game idol to meme lord. No doubt, you’ve seen him taunting you (alone on a Friday night? God, you’re pathetic) in his most famous meme format, although the internet has everyone’s favorite hedgehog appear in any format you can imagine.
However, there are few Sonic memes better than those relating to his first live action feature film, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic fans showed their immense power on the franchise when the team behind Sonic the Hedgehog redesigned the CGI video game hero in 2019.
Sonic’s redesign only happened after widespread criticism exploded on the web, in meme format & otherwise, after the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released (his original beady eyes still haunt us). It appears our massive love for Jim Carrey was not enough for the first draft of Sonic the Hedgehog to make it to the big screen.
Designs were re-done, and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie made it to the big screen in February of 2020, with a more recognizable version of our fast blue friend. Furthermore, it appears Sonic’s redesign was far from the first hurdle the film faced.
A Sonic movie has been in the works since the 1990s, but the gears only began turning for production of the film when Sony acquired the rights in 2013. Director Jeff Fowler signed on in 2016, Paramount got the rights from Sony in 2017, and most of the cast signed on in 2018.
Sonic first came to us with the first video game of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in 1991, a movie that seems to have been growing in the creative womb for nearly thirty years. However, the first Sonic movie couldn’t have been birthed at a worse time.
Paramount Pictures was probably stoked to have the film finally out in February 2020, even if a little later than expected. That is, until March 2020 reared its ugly head and theaters around the globe shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pandemic aside, the Sonic movie did pretty d%#n well, somehow earning more than triple its budget in the box office. In 2021, you don’t need a great theatrical release to get a sequel, or even a franchise, but it sure doesn’t hurt and a new Sonic movie is unsurprisingly on the way.
The Sonic movie’s official Twitter threw skeptics to the sidelines when the account gave us official word today that the second Sonic movie is happening. Fans have been wondering what the second Sonic movie will bring to us, what it will be called, and what other beloved Sonic characters we’ll see in the upcoming sequel (will the next generation finally know the joys of Shadow?).
All kidding aside, there’s only one character Sonic fans are hopefully expecting to see in the second Sonic movie: Miles “Tails” Prower. According to ham-fisted clues in the Sonic movie account’s tweet, today, Tails is almost certain to appear in the Sonic movie sequel.
The tweet sent out today features a text-only teaser with the title (and what a title!) of the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with the number two brandishing Tails’s signature orange hue & double tail. Video game purists will recognize the music in the background from 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the game in which Tails first appears, and a game often cited as one of the GOAT (Greatest of all time) video games.
Ring-snatcher & chaos emerald-seekers rejoice: a second Sonic movie is on the horizon, and it appears Tails will join in on the fun. The official Sonic movie Twitter has spoken, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes out on April 8th, 2022.
