The Playstation 3 store lives: Download the best games now

Retro gamers and people who are just holding out for the PS5 to drop in price were devastated earlier this year when rumors circulated the Playstation 3 store would be taken down, making way for the next generation of Playstation gaming.

However, gaming publications across the board like Polygon reported yesterday the Playstation 3 store isn’t going anywhere. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president Jim Ryan stated the company made the wrong decision pulling the store, and anyone still working with their dusty PS3 lives to play another day.

Luckily for those who haven’t broken the bank for a new PS5, a seemingly endless list of PS3 games are available to play, some of them regarded as the best games of all time. We’ve gathered up a list of our favorite PS3 games you can pick up on the Playstation store and play now, even if their graphics aren’t cutting edge anymore.

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite may have dropped in 2013, but 2021 is the perfect time to play the unequivocally American mythology-laden dystopian steampunk fantasy game. Not only is BioShock Infinite the best BioShock installment, but the game is one of the best games to ever grace the Playstation 3.

BioShock Infinite is one part first-person-shooter, one part mystery-adventure game. Playing BioShock Infinite feels like living through a beautiful sci-fi movie simply dripping with scathing satire of American mythology.

The game is full of detail, and there are plenty of nooks & crannies to discover details to better understand the rich story behind the gameplay. You’ll have a blast playing BioShock Infinite, when the game isn’t making you wonder what the U.S. would look like if a few moments in history went different ways.

Yakuza 5

Yakuza 5 is one of the best games on PS3, and is perhaps the greatest open-world game playable on the aging console. The world of Yakuza 5 is jaw-droppingly rich, and by the time you think you’re done with the game, you’ve just moved on to your second of five protagonists.

Not only is Yakuza 5 impressive, the game is surprising. One minute, you’ll be racing against rival gang members, and the next you’ll be performing a dance competition as a teen pop star. Furthermore, walking around the peaceful cities the game constructs, eating & drinking at its bars & restaurants, will have you weeping for a simpler time, if not fully relaxed by the zen of the Yakuza world.

Grand Theft Auto V

GTA V needs no introduction; the GTA game series is a downright pop culture phenomena, and fans have been anxiously awaiting the next GTA installment since GTA V dropped in 2013.

GTA V might be known for its car theft & sex workers, but the game should be better known for its hilarious mockery of all things American culture, just before the Trump years & twenty-four hour news cycle turned things upside down.

Furthermore, the game is seldom described as such, but GTA V is based in bank robbery, and playing the game feels like playing through one of the best heist movies you’ve ever seen. Don’t take it from us, GTA V is renowned by nearly every gaming authority as one of the best games to ever hit Playstation, and it’s for good reason. Once you get behind the wheel, you’ll be hooked until the end.

The Last of Us

Finally, one of the last games to ever come out on Playstation 3 is unsurprisingly one of the console’s best games.

The Last of Us dropped in 2013, and has since blown up nearly every gaming blog & magazine as one of PS3’s best games. The game’s reputation has only grown with time, and The Last of Us reached such success, it’s been announced the game will come to HBO as a series sometime in the near future.

It makes sense The Last of Us will see new life as an HBO series; the game feels more like a movie than a video game. However, the story-heavy game doesn’t bore its users with its cut-scenes, and the game play is challenging & effective. Pick The Last of Us up on the Playstation store today, just watch out for the clickers.
