There are so many great games out there, so it can be daunting to know what’s worth your time. The best video games are truly timeless. There’s nothing worse than picking up your favorite game from when you were a kid only to discover it’s a clunky & buggy mess.

These games had a profound impact – not only on us as gamers but on game development as a whole. Not only are they great gaming experiences on their own but many of these titles are responsible for spawning many other great games. Grab your consoles and dive into our picks for the best video games of all time!

Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy VI is a game that many consider being the greatest video game of all time. Fans praise the game’s dark setting & themes and its massive & diverse cast of characters designed by Yoshitaka Amano. It also features a brilliant score from composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Many would argue that Final Fantasy VII is the greatest RPG of all time, but without Final Fantasy VI’s ambition & success, the series might have never made it that far. Final Fantasy VI has an incredibly complex plot the likes of which had seldom been seen in a video game. This sort of storytelling would become a trademark of the Final Fantasy series.

Half-Life 2

No game had more of an impact on first-person shooters than Half-Life 2. It redefined the way a story could be told in a video game. At the time of its release, gamers had never seen advanced physics weaved so neatly into a really compelling campaign. It has been called one of the best games of all time.

The game’s gravity gun is one of the most iconic video game weapons ever. Its use in the game as a puzzle-solving tool as well as an offensive weapon inspired countless other great games. The game also featured incredible lighting, artificial intelligence, and in-engine cutscenes.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The best entry in The Witcher video game series is without a doubt 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Though the first two games had a cult following, the third entry thrust The Witcher into the mainstream. The storytelling & engrossing open world fascinated gamers looking to explore. The Dark Souls-inspired combat system clicked with gamers looking for a challenge.

The main character Geralt proved to resonate with people who have never even picked up a controller. Netflix produced a series based on the original book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and a second season is due to be released later this year.

Tetris

Tetris is truly a phenomenon. The Russian puzzle game is incredibly popular perhaps because it is so simple that anyone can play it. Young & old alike still marvel in it’s manic action. Tetris is great for casual gamers but is also popular in the hardcore speedrunning community.

Tetris has even become a hit with the latest generation of gamers. Tetris 99, released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019, features a battle royale mode that pits ninety-nine players against one another. The game’s simple yet chaotic mode is a brilliant update.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Though nearly every entry into the Metal Gear franchise could be considered one of the best video games of all time, Metal Gear Solid V stands out from the rest. Though many fans of the series were disappointed by the seemingly unfinished second half & ending it is without a doubt the greatest stealth game of all time. The gameplay in Metal Gear Solid V truly sets it apart from other action games.

There’s an incredibly rewarding stealth system that rewards player ingenuity. When stealth fails, the player can fall back on some very slick feeling gunplay. Metal Gear Solid V controls better than any other entry in the franchise due to the use of the Fox Engine. This powerful game engine not only provides incredible precision & control but also beautiful visuals & cut scenes.

Diablo II

Diablo II is one of the most popular games of all time. It’s so popular that developer Blizzard Entertainment is planning a remastered version that is set to start consuming all your free time this fall.

The action role playing game offers so much diversity in how you can choose to build your character. There are so many decisions that go into building your demon slaying machine that it can feel pretty overwhelming. There are millions of ways to blow up the forces of evil and claim powerful loot.

The gameplay loop is just so satisfying. If you want to play casually you can merely mow through enemies on easier difficulties. If you are looking for more of a challenge then you can risk permanent character death in hardcore mode for better magical weapons & armor.
