Fact check: Is the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle interview accurate?

Finally! – We’ve heard Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s side of their happily-ever-after, and it’s even more shocking than we thought. With their claims about depression, racism, and feeling “trapped” in the royal institution, we decided to dive deeper into some of the couple’s biggest bombshells. 

Despite Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s incredible announcement about their soon-to-be baby girl, we can’t stop talking about what the royal family allegedly did & didn’t do for the couple. Let’s take a look. 

Farewell, Buckingham Palace

We all wanted to know exactly why Prince Harry & Meghan Markle made their royal farewell in January 2020, but like they stated in their CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey, there were no regrets about leaving. The Duke of Sussex explained that if they were truly protected by the royal family, then they “wouldn’t have left” at all. 

The couple’s struggles between the media & the royal family reportedly took a toll on their mental health. In fact, according to CBS News, the Sussexes stated they were extremely “grateful” to be where they are now. Prince Harry confirmed to Winfrey that they did what they felt they “had to do”.

Baby Archie

One of the most unbelievable moments was when Meghan Markle explained to Oprah Winfrey in the interview that there was a “conversation” about her child Archie before he was even born. Markle confessed: “(there were) concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” 

According to Page Six, Meghan Markle stated these conversations were thankfully not addressed to herself, but were seriously made to her husband Prince Harry. When the Duke of Sussex joined the Duchess, he explained to Oprah that he would never discuss the conversation about Archie’s race concerns with anyone. 

Prince Harry expressed: “That conversation I am never going to share, but at the time it was awkward, I was a bit shocked.”

Thankfully we know it wasn’t the highest members of the royal family as Oprah confirmed to CBS Morning after the royal interview was released: “it was not his grandmother (Queen Elizabeth II) nor his grandfather (Prince Philip) that were part of the conversations about Prince Harry & Meghan baby’s skin color.”

However, just because the Queen & her husband are off the hook for that one, could Prince Harry’s closer relatives be behind such a controversial conversation? ITV News’s royal editor Chris Ship told The Sun: “So that only leaves two family members . . . The two people you are left with is either his father, Prince Charles, or his brother, Prince William, or their wives.” 

Security

As Page Six noted, Prince Harry & Meghan Markle also claimed that royal family members weren’t going to provide Markle any security. Prince Harry told Oprah: “That was right at the beginning, when she wasn’t going to get security, when members of my family were suggesting that she carries on acting, because there was not enough money to pay for her, all this sort of stuff.”

Prince Harry didn’t stop there – He confessed: “Like there were some real obvious signs before we even got married that this was going to be really hard.”

Shocking & devastating

Though Prince Harry & Meghan Markle told us about the royal family’s alleged racist conversations and their questionable calls about security matters, BBC News royal correspondent Jonny Dymond has labelled the interview as “devastating” towards the British royals. 

Johnny Dymond stated: “Many of the revelations are so personal that getting any reaction (from the palace) seems unlikely. The Queen has made clear repeatedly the affection in which the couple are still held. As for the newspapers that the couple so despise –  will they change their turn? It is not in their nature.”
