Is Prince Andrew, Duke of York a “sex addict”? Inside the allegations

Prince Andrew, now referred to as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, remains under public scrutiny years after the original allegations surfaced. A 2020 book by Ian Halperin titled Controversy: Lies and Soiled Cash by the World’s Highly Effective Elite drew renewed attention to the Duke of York’s personal life and his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Halperin claimed to have spoken with a dozen former partners who described the former royal as a sex addict. In an interview with Page Six, Halperin relayed their accounts. “Women painted Andrew as a perfect gent and said it was consensual,” he said. “One woman said he was a very daring lover: there were no limits to where he would go in bed. She told me, ‘Andrew rocked my world in the bedroom,’ but she felt disappointed because after that . . . she didn’t hear from him again.”

Ex-lover accounts

Halperin argued that the alleged addiction stretched back decades and stemmed from Andrew’s position in the royal family. “One of Andrew’s ex-lovers said he had a sex addiction because he was always second to Prince Charles,” the author stated. The former partner suggested that Andrew sought sexual validation to offset feelings of being overlooked. “William is looked at as royal material, just like Charles, whereas [Andrew] and Harry were the bad boys,” Halperin recounted. “This led to his playboy lifestyle. He wasn’t getting attention; it made him feel special to get these beautiful women in his bed.”

Awkward interaction

Halperin was not the first to raise the topic. Courtney Love shared a story in a 2019 interview with The Sun in which Andrew reportedly arrived at her home late at night seeking company. Later statements from Love clarified the account, describing a polite group encounter around 2001 with no sexual intent or solo late-night visit. The original anecdote had placed the former royal at her door at 1 a.m. in search of a “fun night in Hollywood.”

Epstein relationship

Halperin also examined the long-standing friendship between Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein. “There is no doubt that Epstein provided girls to Andrew, and that was the reason they were friends,” he wrote. The author claimed Epstein arranged introductions to women matching Andrew’s preferences. Virginia Roberts Giuffre alleged she was one of those women and stated she was forced to have sex with Andrew three times in the early 2000s while still a teenager. She described one occasion when she was told to sit on his lap and allow him to place his hands on her breasts. “It was easy to give them the reaction they desired, all I had to do was pretend to be entertained by their lewd gestures,” Giuffre told the New York Post. “When Andrew cupped my breast with a doll made in his image, I only giggled away.” The case reached a February 2022 out-of-court settlement that included a financial payment and a charity donation. No admission of liability was made, though the statement acknowledged Giuffre’s experience as a trafficking victim. January 2026 document releases from the US Justice Department added emails and photographs that appeared to show continued contact after public denials. A February 2026 arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office further connected the former royal to the Epstein investigation.

Recent Epstein File Releases

Documents made public in January 2026 included photographs reportedly showing Andrew with Epstein-linked individuals and emails that referenced Buckingham Palace dinners and introductions to women. Investigators noted communications that extended past the dates Andrew had previously claimed as the end of the relationship. The files provided visual and written material that expanded the record beyond earlier reporting.

Legal and Police Investigations 2025-2026

In February 2026 Andrew was arrested on suspicion of sharing confidential trade reports with Epstein during his time as a trade envoy. He was released the same day but remains under investigation. Authorities are examining communications that continued after the publicly stated cutoff. The inquiry represents the most direct legal action taken against him in connection with the Epstein matter.

Title Stripping and Royal Demotion

By 2025 Andrew had been stripped of the titles Prince and Duke of York. He was also removed from the Order of the Garter and received a lifetime ban from Garter Day and other private royal events under King Charles. Current coverage refers to him as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor or the former Prince Andrew. He no longer carries out official royal duties.

Giuffre Lawsuit Resolution

The February 2022 settlement closed the civil case brought by Virginia Giuffre. Terms included an undisclosed payment and a donation to Giuffre’s charity. The agreement contained no admission of liability while acknowledging her status as a victim. Subsequent reporting in 2026 noted that funds were later repaid through a loan arrangement.

Keeping distance

Andrew has maintained that no sexual contact occurred. “I’ve said consistently and frequently that we never had any sort of sexual contact whatever,” he told ABC. “I’m not in a position to know what she’s trying to achieve. But I can tell you categorically I don’t remember meeting her at all.” With titles removed and event access restricted, he remains outside active royal circles. An ongoing police investigation continues as of 2026.
