Catch up before ‘Fast and Furious 9’: Here’s the order to watch the movies in
Fast and Furious 9, or officially named F9, is finally hitting theaters on June 25th, and we are ready! Dom Torretto and the crew are back, but we’ve also got some new additions to the franchise. Stars like John Cena, Cardi B, and Ozuna have been added to the long list of Fast & Furious celebs!
F9 shows Dom Torretto and his family fighting against a world-class assassin & performance driver who is also Dom’s brother, Jakob Torretto. As it goes for any new movie installment, you’ve got to have a rewatch party of the series before the newest film comes out. We’re here to tell you the official chronological order of the Fast and Furious movies!
The Fast and the Furious
The 2001 hit movie that started it all introduced Paul Walker as Brian O’Connor, the LAPD undercover cop who falls in too deep. O’Connor’s original mission to take down the drag racing underworld becomes more difficult as he bonds with Dom Torretto and falls for Dom’s sister, Mia.
The first installment of the series is a whirlwind of action that would set the bar high for the following sequels. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first or 100th time watching it, The Fast and the Furious remains an absolute joyride!
2 Fast 2 Furious
The only film in the franchise not starring Vin Diesel, this 2003 sequel focuses on Brian O’Connor and his new mission. Now an ex-LAPD cop, O’Connor teams up with an ex-con friend. Roman Pearce, and an undercover U.S. Customs Service agent, Monica Fuentes, to take down a drug lord in Miami.
This installment features some iconic characters including Pearce who is played by Tyrese Gibson and Tej who is played by Ludacris. Both actors become mainstays in the Fast and Furious movies.
Fast & Furious
Although this 2009 movie is released after the wild Tokyo Drift installment in 2006, it technically takes place five years after The Fast and the Furious. The fourth film in the franchise is actually the third chronologically.
O’Connor reteams with the FBI and Dominic Torretto in Los Angeles in order to take down a heroin importer. The franchise’s favorite bad@ss ladies Mia & Letty also return. However, this installment also introduces the stunning Gal Gadot as Gisele.
Fast Five
One of the most insane Fast and Furious movies, Fast Five follows O’Connor and escaped-convict Dom as they plan an all-out heist to gain their freedom. However, the bulky & terrifying DEA agent Luke Hobbs is also on their tail.
This free-for-all action film is considered one of the best and outrageous in the series. Fast Five is also a classic for introducing the iconic character Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson.
Fast & Furious 6
Another exciting extravaganza, Fast & Furious 6 follows Fast Five’s heist thrills by having the team come together for one last job, possibly. After their successful heist in the previous film, the team is now living large around the world. However, they struggle with the fact of never being able to settle down back home. That’s until Hobb’s offers them complete pardons for the price of one last heist.
Fast & Furious 6 takes place six months after Fast Five, so thankfully there’s not much of a time skip. Although not as impressive as its predecessor, this film is still a one of a kind blockbuster.
The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift
The third film which was released in 2006 is actually the sixth film in chronological order. The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift brings the same speed & thrill, but this time, it takes place on the neon streets of Tokyo, Japan. The film follows teenage rebel Sean Boswell who has moved to Tokyo to live with his father. Yet, Boswell can’t quite seem to let go of his need for drag racing.
It’s fairly obvious that the studio didn’t really plan this storyline through. Therefore, there are plenty of facts & timelines that don’t add up. If you want to enjoy yourself, just sit back, accept the insanity, and don’t think too hard on this Fast and Furious movie.
Furious 7
With a slight overlap with the end of Tokyo Drift, this movie was released 2015 after the untimely death of Paul Walker. However, with the help of his brothers and CGI, O’Connor never had to leave the beloved series.
Furious 7 brings in Jason Statham as the vengeful brother, Deckard Shaw. The team fights to take down Shaw and a new technological weapon named “God’s Eye”.
The Fate of the Furious
This Fast and Furious movie takes place only a few months after its predecessor and introduces new characters such as Charlize Theron as Cipher and Helen Mirren as Magdalene Shaw.
The group finds some semblance of peace until Dom seems to have fallen back into a life of crime. It’s up to the family to try to bring him back home.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
This spinoff film never makes it quite clear where in the timeline it takes place. However, we can assume that since it’s the most recent, it comes last in the order of Fast and Furious movies.
Hobbs & Shaw seem to form an unlikely alliance as they join together to take down a genetically modified mastermind villain. Sounds crazy and it is, but if you’re a fan of the franchise then this movie is just for you.
