‘The Untamed’: All the hottest book moments the show leaves out

The Untamed is a Chinese Boy Love drama set in ancient China that follows the story of Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan) & Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo). The show has become a worldwide sensation and people all around the globe are losing their minds over these two characters. 

The show is based on the novel titled Mo Dao Zu Shi by author Mo Xiang Xiu. Due to the exceptionally strict censorship laws about the depiction of homosexual relationships on television in China, the show was unable to follow the novel’s narrative to its entirety. While the creators of The Untamed did an exceptional job of portraying the relationship between Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian, the obvious gay content was not included. 

The source material is very explicit. It leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination as the emotional & physical relationship between the two characters unfolds. People are flocking to the internet to read the uncensored version of their beloved WangXian. 

Once the relationship between Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji gets off the ground, there are many sexually explicit moments between the two. They’re at it like rabbits at every possible chance. Although there are far too many to recount them all here, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite steamy WangXian moments from the novel.

Chapter 69 – The blindfolded kiss

At Phoenix Mountain, Wei Wuxian finds himself blindfolded during a hunt after showing off before the hunt started. Still blindfolded, he decides to take pause and rest up against a tree. He senses someone approaching & attempts to engage verbally. The person remains silent. 

In the next moment, Wei Wuxian finds himself being pushed up against the tree, hands restrained. He thinks about fighting back but suddenly feels the warmth of the person’s lips cover his own. He goes into shock. 

Wei Wuxian describes the kiss as aggressive, leaving him feeling dizzy. When the kiss ends, the person disappears before Wei Wuxian can take off his blindfold and figure out who the mystery person is. At this point, it is not revealed in the narrative that the owner of the warm, yet aggressive lips, is in fact, Lan Wangji. 

Up until this point, readers are only really exposed to the stoic, noble, composed version of Lan Wangji. This kiss acts to foreshadow the other side of his personality that he has been repressing for so long. The desire that lives inside Lan Wangji is unleashed aggressively here on Wei Wuxian’s lips, and again in many scenes to come in the novel. 

Had this scene been able to be included it, it would have been inserted in ep.25 Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian in the woods. They share one of their famous intense stare-offs before Lan Wangji tells Wei Wuxian he wants his opinion on a musical piece he composed. 

Wei Wuxian responds and essentially asks what he means to Lan Wangji, who repeats the question back to Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian tells Lan Wangji that he once saw him as his soulmate in this world. Lan Wangji responds that he still considers himself to be that very thing. Sigh!

Chapter 94 & 95 – Breaking the bathtub

Lan Wangji is drunk again, and up to no good! After gallivanting around town causing a drunken ruckus, Wei Wuxian finally manages to get Lan Wangji back to the inn where they are staying. Uncharacteristically dirty, Lan Wangji asks Wei Wuxian to help him wash his face. Throwing caution to the wind, Wei Wuxian suggests that he just help the man bathe instead. 

Lan Wangji’s enthusiastic response to this suggestion is somewhat comical as he quickly strips. Shocked, Wei Wuxian doesn’t know whether he should look down there, or whether he should do the decent thing and cover Lan Wangji up. After a moment, Lan Wangji is reaching for the sash on Wei Wuxian’s robe. Panic sets in and Wei Wuxian informs Lan Wangji that he will not be joining him in the tub. 

After Lan Wangji gets in the tub, Wei Wuxian decides to give him some privacy and turns to leave, causing Lan Wangji to get out once again. Lan Wangji refuses to finish bathing unless Wei Wuxian helps him. This is where things get interesting. 

Unable to hide his desire, Wei Wuxian reaches for Lan Wangji’s abs, but Lan Wangji denies him. They banter back and forth for a moment or two before an emboldened Wei Wuxian dips his hand all the way into the tub and reaches for Lan Wangji’s stuff. Lan Wangji’s reaction is far more aggressive than Wei Wuxian could have anticipated. 

Wei Wuxian is pulled into the tub and assaulted with an onslaught of feverish kisses. The prim & proper, stoic version of Lan Wangji that readers had become acquainted with is nowhere in sight during this scene. Lan Wangji wraps one arm around Wei Wuxian’s waist and slams the other into the side of the tub, which then splits into pieces, causing quite a chaotic mess. 

If there is any doubt in readers’ minds that these two fellas might be more than just good friends, this is the point in the story where that idea is absolutely obliterated. 

The pair end up on the bed. While they don’t actually go all the way and complete the Dance With No Pants, they do engage in other sexual acts that leaves little to the imagination. Once they’re done, Wei Wuxian attempts to explain how he feels to Lan Wangji, who seems to panic at the implication of their actions, and pushes Wei Wuxian away. 

Had this made it into the show, this would have taken place right after Wei Wuxian managed to get Lan Wangji back to the inn after his famous chicken-love-confession. Instead of debaucherous sexcapades, viewers were treated to a very sweet verbal exchange between the two boys that left our hearts singing. 

Chapter 100 – Public declarations of love

In this chapter, Wei Wuxian is in peak form. Having just learned about all the things Lan Wangji did to protect Wei Wuxian after the battle at Nightless City, Wei Wuxian feels compelled to tell Lan Wangji exactly how he feels about him. 

In front of Jin Guangyo, Lan XiChen and other important cultivators, in what can’t be described as any other than a fit of chaos, Wei Wuxian blurts out that he wanted to sleep with Lan Wangji all those years ago. His confession renders Lan Wangji, and everyone else around them, silent. 

Lan Wangji begins to stutter, unable to articulate the words forming in his mind. Wei Wuxian’s confession is essentially interrupted by the weather, and the cultivators take themselves inside, momentarily removing attention from the two men. However, Wei Wuxian, who clearly has no chill whatsoever, continues to publicly declare his love for Lan Wangji. 

He tells Lan Wangji that he likes him, he loves him, that he wants to night hunt with him for the rest of his life. He goes so far as to say that he wants to do the Dance With No Pants with Lan Wangji every single day until they die. Darkness engulfs the cultivators as the wind blows out all the candles, and suddenly Lan Wanji is confessing the very same things to Wei Wuxian. 

Then they’re kissing breathlessly while the other cultivators in the room idly sit by as the scene unfolds. The innocence & hilarity of this scene is why it landed on our list. While the pair might not be engaging in sexytime right here, their absolute lack of regard for propriety or privacy here is everything! 

This would have taken place in episode 47, right after Jin Guangyao captures Wei Wuxian and wraps the string around his neck, threatening his life. 

Chapter 111 – Sexcapades

In this chapter, Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian finally do the Dance With No Pants. The author goes into great detail during this chapter to explicitly describe the physicality of the exchange, as well as Wei Wuxian’s thoughts & feelings about the whole experience. 

In the spirit of leaving something to the imagination here, we’re not going to recount the scene in detail. Here’s what we are willing to divulge. 

• While both men are virgins, it’s clear Wei Wuxian has absolutely no idea what gay sex is all about. Lan Wangji, on the other hand, seems to know exactly what he’s supposed to do, and what needs to go where. 
• When it comes to sexcapades, Lan Wangji’s demeanor changes completely. He is definitely the aggressor in their relationship (and it remains that way for the rest of their lives).
• Wei Wuxian literally begs for mercy.
• Lan Wangji redefines the meaning of the word stamina.

Whether or not this scene qualifies as hot, we’re going to let you decide. This particular scene would have taken place in episode 50, right after Lan Sizhui revealed to Wei Wuxian that he is actually Wen Yuan. Instead, viewers were subjected to a world of pain as they watched Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian go their separate ways yet again, before finally reuniting at the end of the episode. 

Chapter 117 – The incense burner

This is considered an “extra” chapter in the novel. Here, an incense burner that Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian take back to their room works some magical juju on the boys and takes them into their dreams & memories as they sleep. 

The first memory they arrive in belongs to Wei Wuxian. It’s a cute dream that Wei Wuxian used to have before he died that depicts the two men living together alone in a cabin away from the rest of the cultivation community. In the dream, Wei Wuxian goes out and works in the fields every day while Lan Wangji stays home and keeps their domestic life together. 

This particular memory isn’t the reason this chapter made it onto our list though. After this, Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian find themselves at the Library Pavillion in Cloud Recesses, inside Lan Wangji’s memory. This is the reason chapter 117 made it onto the list. 

Remember when Wei Wuxian was transcribing all the Lan sect rules as punishment and drew Lan Wangji a pornographic picture? Remember how scandalized Lan Wangji was? Lan Wangji was so upset that the two of them almost ended up duking it out with their swords (their actual swords, not the other ones). 

Well, in this particular memory, the ending of that confrontation between the two boys plays out quite differently. Grown-up Lan Wangji is embarrassed and tries to convince Wei Wuxian to leave the memory, as the version that young Lan Wangji wished would have transpired was much more explicit than what actually did. Adult Wei Wuxian isn’t having it. 

They watch on as young Lan Wangji has his way with a startled & unsuspecting young Wei Wuxian. As the adults watch the younger versions of themselves engaging in the Dance With No Pants, they find themselves aroused enough to do the same. Young WangXian are getting it on, and adult WangXian is following suit, and the whole scene just turns into one big ol’ boink fest. 

It’s worth noting here that some people might not find this scene hot. Lan Wangji uses his forehead ribbon to restrain Wei Wuxian’s hands. The man is so aggressive that he reduces Wei Wuxian to a crying mess – and not the blissful kind of crying, either. Here’s what we do learn from this scene though: even as a 16-year-old kid, Lan Wangji had an animal living deep inside him. 

As this is an “extra” chapter, it would never have made it into the show. If there were no issues with censorship in China, and there was a possibility of a spinoff, or a season 2, this scene would have taken place then. 

Chapter 120 – Breaking more bathtubs. 

This is yet another “extra” chapter. Wei Wuxian is living with Lan Wangji full time at Cloud Recesses by this time. On this particular day, he returns home from a night hunt with the Juniors and climbs into bed with Lan Wangji. The couple, as they do every night, end up fooling around in bed for a long time.

It’s not the fact that the author describes their sexcapades in this chapter in great detail that landed this moment on our list. It’s the ancillary information that we learn about them while they’re talking that we love so much. 

When they’re done, Lan Wangji prepares a bath for Wei Wuxian. As Wei Wuxian gets in, he asks if Lan Wangji is going to join him. Lan Wangji says no. When Wei Wuxian poutily challenges his spouse to join him in the tub, Lan Wangji reminds Wei Wuxian that in the last four days alone, they have broken four different bathtubs. 

Wei Wuxian is quick to point out that he can’t be held responsible for such acts. Lan Wangji agrees that the breaking of the bathtubs is, in fact, all his fault. Lan Wangji, you dog. 

Again, as this is an “extra” chapter, it wouldn’t have made it into the show. Like our last example, though, we expect this would have made it into a second season, or a spinoff, if they could have made one.
