The first trailer for The Last Duel, the new and upcoming movie starring A-list performers such as Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck, has finally dropped, and whew, are we pumped to see this one. The historical epic film is set to hit theaters this upcoming fall, and so far, it looks like it’s filled with drama, passion, history, and tons of action-packed moments. Let’s take a look at everything we know so far here.
The A-list cast
So who are all the talented actors and actresses that will be in The Last Duel, and which roles will they be playing? Well, the upcoming new movie will star big names such as Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, Alex Lawther, Caoimhe O’Malley, Nathaniel Parker, and more. The highly-anticipated film will also be directed by critically acclaimed and four-time Academy Award-nominated director Ridley Scott.
The upcoming new movie that stars big names from Ben Affleck to Adam Driver will be set during the Hundred Years War, and is inspired by a nonfiction book that is also titled The Last Duel. The Last Duel is based in fourteenth-century France and is all about what happened during the region’s final officially sanctioned judicial duel, so yes, we can assume this upcoming film is about to give us tons of action and fight scenes.
The screenplay of the new movie is written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and this is certainly not the first time the two have teamed up before to write scripts, as they also did it in the award-winning 1997 movie Good Will Hunting. The two have proven again and again that they are as talented off-screen as they are on-screen. Nicole Holofcener will also be serving as a screenwriter as well as a producer of the upcoming film.
The synopsis
The Last Duel begins when Marguerite de Carrouges, played by Emmy winner Jodie Comer, is violently assaulted by Le Gris, played by Oscar nominee Adam Driver. Le Gris denies these accusations, but Marguerite, who is the wife of Jean de Carrouges played by Oscar winner Matt Damon, does not back down from her claims despite risking her life. This leads to a trial which eventually has to be settled by physical combat.
Ready to watch fourteenth-century Matt Damon and Adam Driver battle it out in a duel to the death? We are too, and we’re already making predictions on who will be winning the grueling fight. The story has a friend-to-enemies plotline that is just as dramatic as it is vicious, and this story also happens to be France’s last sanctioned duel. While you can expect scenes to be very dramatized, the events will be based on real-life historical facts.
Variety reported that Matt Damon’s character, Jean de Carrouges, “is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield”. As for Adam Driver, his character Le Gris “is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court”. As for two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck, the star will be playing Count Pierre D’Alençon, and he’s even rocking a blonde hairdo in the trailer.
Variety announced that “The film is produced by Scott, Kevin J. Walsh (Manchester by the Sea), Jennifer Fox (Nightcrawler), Holofcener, Damon and Affleck with Kevin Halloran (Ford v Ferrari), Drew Vinton (Promised Land), Madison Ainley (Justice League) serving as executive producers”.
