Is Britney Spears’s father trying to place her under a psychiatric hold?
The case of Britney Spears and her conservatorship at the hands of her father is still working its way through the courts. Hopefully, it ends with the singer getting away from a situation that doesn’t sound very safe for her. #FreeBritney. Until a decision is made, however, it’s definitely a weird limbo state for things to be stuck in. Now, well, it looks like things are getting worse for Britney Spears.
Apparently, Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, is looking to get Britney placed under a psychiatric hold. According to new court documents, which were filed Friday, Aug. 6, he seems to be angling to get Britney under an involuntary psych hold. When this happened in 2008, this allowed Jamie Spears to become the conservator over his eldest daughter.
So what does this mean for Britney Spears? Can her father actually get her placed in an involuntary psych hold? Or will this not go through at the present time considering their whole court case? Is this another example of the abuse that Britney Spears alleges she’s experienced while under her father’s conservatorship? Here’s what we know about the latest in the case.
What Jamie Spears says
So why is her father angling for this psych hold? Well, let’s take a look at what Jamies Spears is saying about Britney. According to Variety, the court docs that Spears files says, “On July 9, 2021, I received a phone call from Ms. Montgomery. During our call, Ms. Montgomery sounded very distraught and expressed how concerned she was about my daughter’s recent behavior and overall mental health.”
He added, “Ms. Montgomery explained that my daughter was not timely or properly taking her medications, was not listening to the recommendations of her medical team and refused to even see some of her doctors.” Jodi Montgomery is the co-conservator of Britney Spears’ person. Meaning that Spears cannot make decisions about his daughter’s health/body/career without Montgomery also giving the okay.
Right now, Jamie Spears has it sounding like Britney cannot be trusted to handle her own health, and makes it sound like Montgomery agrees with him. That it was her idea to begin with. Montgomery remembers things differently.
What Jodi Montgomery says
Jodi Montgomery does have concerns about the mental health of Britney Spears. And that’s about as much as she’s willing to reveal. Well, except for this little detail, Jamie Spears being put back in sole control of Britney’s money is having a negative impact on her mental health. Bessemer Trust, which served as a financial co-conservator, has since filed paperwork ending the position.
The documents said, “Ms. Montgomery does have concerns about Ms. Spears’ ‘recent behavior and overall mental health,’ as set forth in Jamie Spears’ Declaration dated August 6, 2021. Due to medical privacy, Ms. Montgomery cannot go into those concerns with any further detail except to say that having her father Jamie Spears continuing to serve as her Conservator instead of a neutral professional fiduciary is having a serious impact on Ms. Spears’ mental health.”
Is this abuse?
From the outside looking in, it does look like gaslighting, at least. Whenever Britney tries to reassert control over her own life away from her father’s conservatorship, he labels her as crazy. A few years ago, for example, Britney was forced into an emergency mental health stay when her father had to get surgery. At the time, she also refused to do another Las Vegas residency.
It’s a pattern and it doesn’t look like a healthy one. It’s calling a woman crazy every time she tries to live her own life. Isn’t, like, the definition of being a gaslighter? So yeah, Jamie Spears needs to step back.
