When is Netflix dropping ‘Never Have I Ever’ season 3?
Where the heck is season three of Never Have I Ever on Netflix?! We’ve been waiting on pins & needles for the new episodes of this show to drop. What can we say? It’s just so exciting!
But maybe you haven’t been caught up on the latest developments. Or maybe you’ve never seen Never Have I Ever at all. Either way, we have all the background you’ll need. Strap in, and let’s explore this series together, shall we? Spoilers ahead!
Never Have I Ever: some background
Never Have I Ever is a Netflix show created by Lang Fisher & Mindy Kaling. It’s partially based on Kaling’s Boston childhood and focuses on Devi Vishwakumar (played by new actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), an Indian-American teenager whose father, Mohan, dies. Devi’s freshman year at high school sucked for multiple reasons, and she’s determined to have a better sophomore year, but life gets in the way of her dreams.
The show covers everything from peer pressure & high school drama to the main character’s identity as an Indian-American girl to her struggle with grief in the absence of her father. We watch Devi’s rivalry with another boy named Ben, see her feel pressured to say she had sex with her friend Paxton, and follow Devi’s mother as she tries to understand her daughter in the light of grief.
We also get some LGBT representation in Fabiola, one of Devi’s friends. However, the focus of the story is on Devi herself, and she soon finds herself caught in a love triangle between Ben & Paxton. She ultimately chooses Paxton at the very end of season two.
When Never Have I Ever was released, the show was critically acclaimed, regarded as one of the smartest coming-of-age comedies to come out in the last few years. It was praised for having a dense exploration of South Asian identities and giving great representation on screen. The show & cast were nominated for numerous awards and even won “Best YA” from the African-American Film Critics Association’s (AAFCA) TV Honors.
So Never Have I Ever is a Netflix hit and amazingly well-received show. What do we know about its upcoming episodes?
What about season three?
On August 19th, 2021, Never Have I Ever’s official Instagram & Twitter posted a video with the caption, “OMFG. WE’RE COMING BACK FOR AN ALL NEW SEASON Y’ALL!!!!!!!!!!! SCREAMMMMMMMM!” The video showed off clips of the show and said a new season would be “coming soon” to Netflix. In addition to this, the following words appeared on Never Have I Ever’s series page: “It’s Official: Another Season Is Coming.”
We haven’t heard any news from official channels since that video, leaving us all in major suspense. However, according to the website COUPM, the period between the release of season one & two was fifteen months. Because of this, we can probably expect the same gap between season two & three, giving us an estimated release window of the summer of 2022.
We also know what Jaren Lewison, who plays Ben, wants from future seasons. In a cast interview with Entertainment Weekly, when various people involved in the show discussed the season two finale, Lewison said that he wants to explore Ben’s “inner conflict that has just surfaced that he’s now going to have to deal with.” Lewison continued with the following words:
“I’m really excited, fingers crossed, for season 3 to see that explored. It’s a situation that we’ve never seen him in. Both of those girls have some really incredible qualities that Ben’s really attracted to, and I think it’s going to come down to what is going to make him a better person. Who’s going to challenge him in specific ways, and who’s going to make him feel seen?”
That would certainly be an interesting thing to explore. That gets us even more excited for Never Have I Ever’s third season to hit Netflix!
Season three HYPE!
We’re definitely looking forward to seeing the new season of Never Have I Ever on Netflix. Now that Devi & Paxton are officially together, who knows where their relationship can go in season three? And of course, it’ll be great to see all of our favorite characters again as well.
