The new movie from Wes Anderson just got a huge new star to join the cast. Will Scarlett Johansson be the star of the auteur's latest film?

Will Scarlett Johansson star in this new Wes Anderson movie?

Scarlett Johansson is the latest star to join the cast of Wes Anderson’s new untitled movie. The Black Widow star has joined the cast of the film that is currently being filmed in Spain. Fans of Johansson’s would know that this is not the first time that the actress has joined the cast for the auteur’s films.

Johansson has previously teamed with Anderson on 2018’s Isle of Dogs, lending a voice to show dog Nutmeg. This new film will be the first live action performance from the two-time Academy Award nominee in one of Anderson’s films.

Untitled

Wes Anderson is currently filming his latest film, which is currently untitled. Unsurprisingly, the details of the plot are unknown. The film began shooting this month in Spain and is set to conclude in late September. Character details are also tightly under wraps.

The project will feature many Anderson regulars alongside some high-profile first timers. Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, and Adrien Brody were announced to be involved with the film early on. Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Rupert Friend, and now, Scarlett Johansson have joined the impressive cast.

The untitled film will reunite Johansson with her Lost in Translation co-star Bill Murray. The two previously lent their voices to 2016’s The Jungle Book, which currently has a sequel in development that could see the two return.

Johansson’s post-Marvel plans

Scarlett Johansson has been in the news recently for suing Disney for breach of contract. Johansson’s camp alleges that Disney’s simultaneous digital & theatrical release of Black Widow depressed ticket sales. Disney claims that Johansson’s contact entitled her to a wide release, not an exclusive theatrical release. This legal battle may have broad repercussions as studios look to control the streaming market.

The next time Scarlett Johansson is set to appear in theaters will be this December when Sing 2 is released. The two-time Academy Award nominee is set to reprise her role as Ash the porcupine. The film was pushed back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel will see the return of Matthew McConaghey, Reese Witherspoon, and Taron Egerton as well as newcomers Pharrell Williams, Bono, Eric André, and Halsey.

Johansson has long been rumored to be the first choice for the role of Audrey in the upcoming remake of Little Shop of Horrors. The new version of the beloved musical will be directed by Greg Berlanti and will feature new music & lyrics from original writers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Chris Evans is rumored to be involved as well.

The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson’s new movie The French Dispatch is finally set to hit theaters this fall. The long anticipated film was written & directed by Anderson. While it was originally conceived as a musical, producer Jeremy Dawson has confirmed that the final product is not actually a musical.

As is the trademark of any Wes Anderson movie, The French Dispatch features a remarkable ensemble cast. Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, and of course Bill Murray are among the cast of this new movie.

Anderson is known for having a stable of regular actors in his films. Bill Murray has appeared in nine Anderson films. Jason Schwartzman has appeared in seven. Tilda Swinton and Adrien Brody have starred in four. Each of these actors is set to appear in Anderson’s untitled new film as well so these numbers are sure to go up.

The French Dispatch premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The new Wes Anderson movie received good reviews from those in attendance. The film was set to premiere at the festival in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans. The film was tentatively scheduled to be released on October 16, 2020, but that release was pushed back to October 22, 2021.
