Kathryn Hahn: These shows and movies prove evil roles are her calling
Sometimes actors have a calling, and their niche could be a superhero or a villain. Kathryn Hahn has proven herself to be perfect in incredibly wicked roles. Whether it’s movies or shows, Hahn captivates the audience. That’s exactly what she’s done in her latest role in WandaVision.
Kathryn Hahn plays Agnes, the friendly neighbor to Wanda & Vision. (Spoilers for episode 7). However, she’s actually the witch Agatha Harkness, which most of the internet speculated since episode 1. Even though we’ve only scratched the surface of how evil her character is, she has to be devilish to kill Sparky and bite a kid.
The beauty of Kathryn Hahn’s characters is her ability to balance her wickedly evil roles with her brand of comedy. No matter if she’s the lead or a side character, she steals every scene she’s in. Here are some other TV shows and movies that prove how talented she is in those evil roles.
Eleanor – Brooklyn Nine-Nine
If Brooklyn Nine-Nine was continuing beyond season 8, we’d have loved to see some more of Kathryn Hahn as Eleanor, Charles Boyle’s domineering ex-wife. In the episode, she blackmails Boyle to intimidate a ninety-year-old priest who’s suing her because she hit him with her car. Her bargaining chip: Boyle’s sperm he put in a sperm bank and wants to have a baby with his new wife.
Hahn breaks every hostage-taker trope. Even Jake Peralta says how she’d never “shoot” a hostage, and she goes ahead and does it. She does not care what happens to the sperm but figures she can use the situation to get ahead. She also legally owns the sperm and Boyle’s dignity.
She’s always one step ahead of Peralta & Boyle, and her wickedness goes beyond her performance. Even though Peralta & Boyle reveal the majority of the relationship during their marriage, Hahn’s introduction in the episode lays the groundwork for a believable character.
Alice – Step Brothers
Alice is one of the biggest examples of how she steals every scene. While Alice might not be as evil as her husband in Step Brothers, she tries to have an affair with his stepbrother Dale, played by John C. Reilly.
Her scenes with Dale are hilarious as she tries to have sex with the man child. She exudes the devilish comedy we’re used to seeing from her characters. The scene where she makes out with Dale has to be one of the funniest scenes in an already perfect comedy.
Jennifer Barkley – Parks and Recreation
Jennifer Barkley is one of the more devilish characters in the Parks and Recreation. She’s the antagonizing figure in Leslie Knope’s city council campaign. She comes off as this really nice person, but deep down, she’s a ruthless Washington campaign manager.
She’s the best side character in the show because of how confident she is and how she uses her intelligence to manipulate voters and win every election she’s involved in. She plays the professional woman very willing to step on everyone to get to the top so perfectly. It might be her best performance after WandaVision.
Carla – Bad Moms
Kathryn Hahn plays the devil on Amy Kunis & Kristen Bell’s shoulders in the comedy Bad Moms. She brings the movies together as she leads the band of merry women. It might not be an evil role like in WandaVision, but Bad Moms shows her ability to play these fun characters who are a little devilish because they go against the grain.
She might not be the typical version of motherhood we’re used to seeing in movies, but she makes the film. Someone needs to guide Kunis and Bell. We couldn’t imagine another actress to be the model of bad motherhood.
