In a shocking turn of events, Jamie Spears stepped down as Britney's conservator. Why though, and is Britney really free? Get the naked truth and all the tea here.

The naked truth: Is Britney Spears finally free from her father?

Stop the presses. Hold the phones. Jamie Spears actually voluntarily stepped down as Britney Spears’s conservator.

In a filing to the Los Angeles Superior Court, Jamie Spears stated he believes there are no grounds for suspension or removal, but is apparently stepping down due to bad press, or as he put it in the court filing, in the “best interests” of the case.

Does this mean Britney Spears’s young fans have scored a victory? Is Britney Spears finally free? Let’s dive into this massive plot twist in the #FreeBritney saga for the complete, unadulterated, naked truth.

Best interest

According to the court filing obtained by Page Six, Jaimie Spears declared he’s stepping down in the “best interest” of the case. The filing from his lawyer elaborated: “Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”

Jamie Spears has sparked the ire of Britney Spears’s fandom since a couple of years ago, when information about the restrictive nature of Spears’s conservatorship began leaking. After Spears was checked into a mental health facility for “me time”, people began questioning whether she needed that much control in her life.

Spears has been under conservatorship since 2007, when Britney Spears’s public outbursts flooded the tabloids. One of these infamous incidents was when Spears shaved her head in front of paparazzi. As part of her conservatorship, she could not handle her own financial assets, drive a car, or even – per Britney Spears herself – have more children.

Testimony

In July, Britney Spears had a chance to tell the courtroom, and the world, the naked truth about her conservatorship. “He loved the control (he had) to hurt his own daughter, one hundred thousand percent”, she declared to the court. She further asserted that anyone involved in her conservatorship should be in jail for abuse.

“Ma’am, my dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, and my management, who played huge roles in punishing me when I said ‘No’ (to going on tour) — Ma’am, they should be in jail.”

Amid Britney’s statements that she was forcibly drugged or forced to do a mental health stay if she didn’t cooperate with conservators, she also told the court her conservators refused to allow her to remove her IUD so she could have more children like she wanted.

Celebrity support

As the #FreeBritney movement grew, tons of celebrities have come to Britney Spears’s defense, declaring she should be free. Among these voices are Miley Cyrus, former N’SYNC member Lance Bass, Olivia Rodrigo, and fellow 2000s star Paris Hilton.

When addressing the backlash Britney Spears received for remarks about Hilton’s time in boarding school, Hilton responded by defending Spears and explaining how tough it was to be a teenage celebrity in the 2000s, especially with an unforgiving and unrelenting media circus.

“Dealing with it as a teenager was hard but I can’t imagine, still, as an adult, after working your entire life . . . She’s built a huge empire; she’s a legend, she’s an icon, she’s a mother. She’s amazing and she has these people controlling her money, her life”, Hilton said.

So is Britney really free?

Here’s the naked truth: Spears may be free from her father’s control, but she may not be free from her conservatorship. A hearing was scheduled for later this fall to remove Jamie Spears from Britney’s conservatorship, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. In fact, in the court documents Jamie Spears filed, he’s asserted he wants a hand in picking Britney Spears’s next conservator.

“So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator,” the documents said.
