Is Barbie a lesbian? Uncover the clues in this intriguing movie trailer

Are you ready for the ultimate summer extravaganza? Enter Barbie, the campy, uber-pink comedy that’s set to take the world by storm! With LGBTQ+ icons Scott Evans and Alexandra Shipp leading the parade on a dazzling pink float in West Hollywood’s Pride, the excitement around this flick is spreading faster than glitter at a drag show. The trailer alone has social media ablaze.

Buckle up, folks, as Barbie is here to prove it’s the queen of summer blockbusters!

Pinklicious parade

Evans and Shipp made heads turn and jaws drop as they cruised through West Hollywood’s Pride parade on June four. According to the trailer, The float was a Barbie lover’s dream, complete with an oversized logo, two disco balls, and baskets bursting with Barbie and Pride flags. If that wasn’t fabulous enough, drag queen Lolita Colby and queer influencer Jazzmyne Jay added their fabulousness to the mix.

Shipp, who we all adore as Storm from the X-Men franchise, stunned the crowds in an electric-pink ensemble, while Evans sported a tropical shirt and pink shorts combo that screamed summer. Their vibrant outfits and rainbow fans were an unapologetic celebration of queer joy.

The dolls

Now, let’s talk about the casting coup! Barbie, directed by the visionary Greta Gerwig, boasts an all-star lineup. The film showcases Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the iconic Barbie and Ken, but that’s just the tip of the Barbie Dreamhouse.

Judging by the trailer, expect to see Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, and a parade of other stars adding their magic to this glam-fest.

Evans, who you might remember from the ABC soap One Life to Live, is just one of the many Kens in the movie. But wait till you see him in a cowboy hat! Shipp, on the other hand, plays a celebrated author.

But what’s a Barbie world without music? Rumor has it that Barbie comes with a killer soundtrack, and a Barbieland so drenched in pink that it’s said to have caused a global pink-paint shortage. Now that’s commitment to a color scheme!

Camp and pink

It’s not just the campy aesthetics that are drawing people in; the film’s plot is tightly under wraps, leaving everyone guessing. Some whispers suggest that it might delve into the creation of Barbie dolls. There are also murmurs about Ryan Gosling fully embracing his Ken character, making us wonder what kind of ride we’re in for.

But wait, there’s more! In an interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie spilled the beans on a little tradition known as “Movie Church”, where the cast and crew gathered to watch films that inspired Greta Gerwig for Barbie. The 1964 French musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was among the films featured. With its sung-through dialogue and heightened reality, could it be hinting at a similarly avant-garde approach in Barbie?

It doesn’t stop there. The list also includes The Young Girls of Rochefort, another Jacques Demy classic. The film’s Technicolor palette and rom-com feel seem to have influenced Barbie, with Gerwig’s director of photography creating a color template called “Techni-Barbie”.

Lights barbie!

Gerwig talked about the “authentic artificiality” of these films in her interview. It’s a marriage of illusion and tangibility, and that’s the exciting essence they aimed to capture for Barbie.

As we await the release of this pink-tinged bonanza, one can’t help but wonder: Is Barbie going to redefine summer blockbusters and campy cinema? What surprises does Greta Gerwig have in store for us? As the world turns pink with anticipation, there’s only one way to find out.
