Did ‘The Crown’ season 4 cause abuse against Duchess Camilla?
The Crown has just released episodes depicting Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s terrible marriage, and the media cannot stop talking about it. Fans have gone into a frenzy, shaming Duchess Camilla for apparently having an affair with Prince Charles in the early 1980s.
The Crown, created by Peter Morgan, dives into the inner rivalries and political problems of the British royal family. The series stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, and Emma Corrin (later replaced by Elizabeth Debicki) as Princess Diana.
Season 4 of The Crown focuses on what went wrong between Princess Diana and Prince Charles but also brings trouble to Duchess Camilla. Played by Emerald Fennell, Duchess Camilla continuously finds herself knocking on the palace door.
Fans have spoken
Season 4 taking place between 1979 and 1990, fans saw The Crown’s portrayal of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s relationship as an eye-opener. The episodes present Camilla convincing Prince Charles to marry Diana, quickly rushing back into the Prince’s life when she got the opportunity.
The Royal Family’s Instagram page posted a picture of Duchess Camilla smiling at an event for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay competition. The Duchess stated, “I am incredibly proud of all of you for overcoming the year’s challenges with your outstanding creativity on this vitally important subject. Thank you for taking part.”
Fans commented on Duchess Camilla’s post saying, “Please . . . no one cares about Camilla”, and calling her “The other woman”. Comments with the most likes were about the late Princess Diana, “Diana Forever” and “Diana is still the MVP”.
Metro reported that fans have expressed their greatest love for the fallen Princess and largely refuse to accept Duchess Camilla. They have angrily commented, “We love Diana! Camilla will never be a queen!” and “the world hates you”.
American and Ghanaian-born activist, Anna Gifty spoke about The Crown finally revealing the problems with the royal family. Gifty tweeted, “Prince Charles is trending because Gen Z and Millennials are (re)learning about the abuse Princess Diana was subject to. Harry and Meghan’s exit always made sense, but now watching The Crown, it morally made sense. Harry left to protect his family, the family he chose.”
Disagree with The Crown
Author of multiple biographies, Sally Bedell Smith, shared how she was completely shocked by the lack of factual information in The Crown. Smith has published autobiographies of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Princess Diana. Smith spoke out against the series, stating “people take The Crown at face value and they believe everything they see in the series, that includes Charles and Camilla”.
Royal historian Hugo Vickers stated that The Crown describing an affair between Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla in the early 80s is not true. The Crown shows Prince Charles gifting Camilla a bracelet in 1981 which apparently started their affair. However, Vickers stated, “To my understanding of the relationship, after that, he didn’t see Camilla until 1986.”
According to Insider, Hugo Vickers claimed that Duchess Camilla and Prince Charles may have attended the same royal engagements, but that had nothing to do with an affair. Daily Mail reported Prince Charles had no contact with Duchess Camilla for five years after Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981. The affair only occurred in 1986 when the couple’s marriage officially “broke down”.
Hard feelings
Duchess Camilla has not spoken about the recent remarks. Royal reporter Katie Nicholl told Vanity Fair, “I imagine she’ll be turning in with a glass of red wine to watch it; she has seen the previous series.” Duchess Camilla’s friend Nicholl added, “She has a wonderful sense of humor and this won’t fuss her in the slightest.”
Cosmopolitan claimed Prince William does not share the same sense of humor as his step mother, Duchess Camilla. Prince William is not impressed with how his parents have been depicted on the show. Apparently Prince William “feels that both his parents are being exploited and being presented in a false, simplistic way to make money”.
