‘A Clean Sleep’ from Robert Goose Scott: The masterpiece you can’t miss
Most romantic comedies focus on the events leading up to the relationship, not the relationship itself. Every real relationship has hardships, and people need to acknowledge that it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. Robert Goose Scott tries to bring the honesty to his storytelling, like in A Clean Sleep.
A playwright with film experience, Scott started A Clean Sleep as a one-act play. But then Scott realized the script worked better as a short narrative film instead. The concept of a wife planning a romantic dinner for her husband, but he comes home from work tired and sweaty and not in the mood feels simple, but there’s a lot of room.
Simple yet big dramatic stories
Scott has a habit of telling stories that feel simple, but thanks to the concept there’s a lot of room to grow. Of course, this comes down to his philosophy of filmmaking being a collaboration. “I believe filmmaking is a collaborative effort between the talent and the crew. I let my actors act, I let my crew do their jobs, and I concentrate on the film.” says Scott.
But this helps him create stories that feel immersive and realistic. You feel like you’ve lived his story because you most likely have. Thanks to a positive work environment and a touch of truth in his scripts (A Clean Sleep is based on a true story), his stories are all around gorgeous and emotional.
History of storytelling
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this is far from Scott’s first rodeo with storytelling. Before A Clean Sleep, Scott also wrote, produced, and directed the short Seance, as well as worked on the short film Charlotte on the Rebound.
Scott also wrote and directed two one-act plays for the Cal State University, Bakersfield’s Theatre Department, while also directing and producing two short films for The Film Club at CSUB. Though his undergraduate degree was theater, his graduate degree focused on screenwriting and directing.
Accolades galore
For A Clean Sleep, Scott received Best Short Dramedy at the Take It Easy Film Festival, an Honorable Mention at the One-Reeler Film Festival, and earned a Nomination for Best Romantic Comedy at the Indie Short Fest. A Clean Sleep has been screening at festivals over the past two years, so we’re excited to see what’s next for Scott.
