From Soho to the World: Jacqueline Fernandez Presents Dick Bradsell’s Wake-Up Call Cocktail
Filmmaker Jacqueline Fernandez’s Dick Bradsell Espresso Martini—a five-minute doc—recounts the racy story behind the iconic cocktail’s creation: a model’s 1985 request for a “wake-me-up and then f*ck-me-up” drink. Filmed at The Social in London (Bradsell’s regular DJ spot), capturing a cinematic aesthetic reminiscent of Steve McQueen and Edgar Wright, it’s a stylish tribute
Dick Bradsell: Espresso Martini Celebrating 40 years
Why did you decide to make a short documentary about the Espresso Martini?
“It all started with a cocktail menu at the London’s Langham. Dick Bradsell’s name jumped out, and a little research revealed a fascinating story. The widespread misconceptions about the Espresso Martini’s origins, coupled with the drink’s 40th anniversary, made telling its story a must.”
Tell us a little more about Dick Bradsell?
“Dick Bradsell’s transformative impact on cocktail culture is this film’s core message. His commitment to quality, bartender training, and democratising the sophisticated cocktail experience redefined London’s drinking scene. Cocktails as we know it were not in every bar, they were mainly in private clubs and hotels- there is politics behind that but that is another story. He was a true legend who many in hospitality call, ‘The Cocktail King’, he was a revolutionary rebel at heart.”
What’s the most interesting fact you uncovered?

“Beyond bartending, Dick Bradsell had a huge impact on London’s creative world. He was cast by Christopher Nolan in his first feature film, ‘Following’, co-wrote a song for The English Beat, and even had the Espresso Martini renamed ‘Pharmaceutical Stimulant’ by artist Damien Hirst, at his bar, The Pharmacy.”
Who will enjoy this documentary?
“Whether you’re a cocktail connoisseur or simply curious about the history of a beloved drink, the Espresso Martinis creation story makes for a fun conversation-starter!”
Who was involved in bringing this project to life?
“Beatrice Bradsell’s contribution was indispensable; we would not have been able to move forward without her. Bea’s perspective on her father’s legacy and the Espresso Martini’s creation shaped the film’s emotional heart. With her support, we secured access to images provided by publisher Mixellany Limited’s book, Dicktales or”Thankyou’s and Sluggings”, adding essential visual depth to the doc. It was important to get Wyborowa, Tia Maria Coffee Liqueur, and Illycaffè involved as they were Dick Bradsell’s final choice for the Espresso Martini recipe.”
Who helped you make the film?
“Director of Photography Jon Muschamp (recent BSC award winner) assembled a top-tier crew (including 1st AC Sam Irwin, Gaffer Alex Magill, and Colorist Vlad Barin of Harbor Picture Company), delivering stunning visuals. Austin-based Editor JJ Castillo swiftly delivered a rough cut to Oscar-nominated musician Adrian Quesada within a week. Quesada’s Oscar nomination shifted our initial timeline by 5 days, but Castillo’s dedication made it possible! Quesada was sending me stems right up until the night before the cut was delivered to our Sound Designer, Ruth Rainey of We Are Audio. At the time, Quesada was in Los Angeles, and with the 8-hour gap, it was an every-minute matter type of thing. It takes a village and support to make anything; Tom Reynolds (1st AD) kept us on schedule, and we made our day; Jerome McCann (sound mixer) did a beautiful job, and Katy Fray (Hair / Makeup Designer) lent her expertise and skills. Jack Sutcliffe (Producer and Co-Founder of Arling Films), Cynthia Fernandez (Executive Producer), Chloe Tweedy, and Lizzie Maxwell (Associate Producers) supported the project from the ground up. Filming at The Social was crucial to capturing the right atmosphere. We’re grateful to Graeme and Maria for their cooperation.”
Where is the documentary available to view?
