Why are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle more popular with Americans than Brits? Let's take a look at what separates this couple from other royals.

How did Prince Harry and Meghan manage to win over Americans?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are royalty, so they should be more famous across the pond than they are in the U.S., right? Why does the couple seem more & more like a typical American celebrity couple? Gossip rags & paparazzi alike follow the two celebs with the ferocity of chasing the next Ben Affleck scoop.

We can only imagine our holier-than-thou friends who don’t follow celeb gossip (who needs ‘em?) see the couple and assume they’re set to appear in the next Avengers movie. Why? The two look more like camera-ready up & coming movie stars than British royalty. When did the couple’s image shift, and how come Prince Harry and Meghan have Americans in the palms of their hands?

Never be royals

Prince Harry and Meghan became more appealing to the average American when they became, well, Americans. The couple left the royal family overseas in 2020, the first announcement of the scandalous break coming in January.

People reported the two told the public they’d be taking a “step back as senior members of the Royal Family” in January 2020. By March 30th, 2020, the couple made their final post on the @SussexRoyal Instagram page, and by this past July, the two purchased a home in California and became U.S. residents.

Prince Harry and Meghan glowed brighter on the American radar after they moved, with news publications putting out front-page stories when they simply left the house in December. Undoubtedly, moving to the U.S. earned the couple American fans, but what else made the American public really embrace Prince Harry and Meghan?

Revealing interviews

We’re not saying an interview with Oprah puts you at the top tier of American celebrities, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. In March, the two sat down with one of the U.S.’s most famous & beloved celebs with a cult-like following (lest we forget her book club), Oprah Winfrey.

NBC reported in March, even before Prince Harry and Meghan went into details of their move with Oprah, that Prince Harry and Meghan told James Corden they left the royal family because of Britain’s “toxic media”. Anyone who’s seen what TMZ does has to take the couple’s move to the U.S. with a chuckle, considering the damage the U.S. media has been known to do.

However, there’s no bigger interview one can score in the states than one with Oprah, and the couple’s raw interview with one of the U.S.’s biggest celebs only further labeled the couple as American personalities.

Empire

Earlier today, The Washington Post reported that the couple is following the lead of American celebrity couples before them and creating a brand for themselves. Prince Harry and Meghan host a podcast together, and in April, their production company Archewell announced they’d be dropping a docuseries with Netflix.

Furthermore, Meghan announced that her first children’s book The Bench will drop in June, and the couple appears to be following the practice of any American couple with money: building an Empire.

While American celebrity royal couple Beyonce & Jay-Z moved from music to investments in sports teams like The Nets and entertainment companies like Parkwood Entertainment, Prince Harry and Meghan have also begun to build their brand with different projects & companies. Building one’s empire is the American way, and Prince Harry and Meghan’s is on its way up.

Prince Harry and Meghan are working on their nuclear family while living in California and putting their money into various projects. They sure sound like Americans to us, and U.S. fandom for the couple is proving them to fit right in. Do you expect Prince Harry and Meghan to stay in America’s good graces?
