What is the Champions League?

Originally named the European Champion Clubs Cup, the UEFA Champions League kicked off (no pun intended) its competition proper on October 20th, 2020, having wrapped up its qualifying matches on September 20th, 2020.

The Champions League has a total of seventy-nine teams participating, all from fifty-four of the fifty-five UEFA member associations. While the rankings & participants from each association are as convoluted to follow as an M. Night Shyamalan movie twist, you cannot deny the excitement & tradition of the Champions League. Perhaps that is why we’re so invested in the current Champions League standings!

Grab your bucket of Red Vines, crack open a soda, and kick back as we take you through the current Champions League standings, which are broken up into eight groups.

Group A

All teams in Group A have played a total of six games, with FC Bayern München leading the pack with five wins and one draw. They’re currently the clear favorite to go all the way in this group, as the second place team, Club Atlético de Madrid, has a current standing of two wins, three draws, and one loss.

Group B

Real Madrid CF, for the time being, leads Group B with a record of three wins, one draw, and two losses. They’re currently only up one game on the second place club, Vfl Borussia Mönchengladbach. Group B clearly shows a bit more parity than Group A, which is better for the fans in terms of the overall level of competition. Nobody likes a clear-cut favorite.

Group C

In first place is Manchester City FC, who have a record of five wins and one draw. FC Porto, not too far behind, has a record of 4-1-1.

Group D

Liverpool FC, who everybody seems to love, has a record of 4-1-1, only one win in front of Atalanta BC and two wins ahead of AFC Ajax. Now’s the time to jump on the Liverpool bandwagon if you want it to look legit to your friends . . . just saying.

Group E

Chelsea FC has a current record of four wins and two draws, free of any losses unlike the second place Sevilla FC, who has a record of 4-1-1. Is anybody else used to seeing all of these draws?

Group F

Leading the pack in Group F with a record of 4-1-1 is Borussia Dortmund, a clear two-game lead over the second place SS Lazio. Club Brugge is sitting pretty in third place with a record of 2-2-2, while FC Zenit has yet to win a match. Yikes!

Group G

We have our first group tie! Both Juventus & FC Barcelona are sitting on a current record of five wins and one loss. Regrettably, for the third-place club, FC Dynamo Kyiv, it doesn’t look like they have much of a chance entering this race as they have a record of 1-1-4.
