Is this just real life or is this just fantasy? Considering that real life lacks dragons & wizards, we’re going to say that this isn’t just fantasy. Instead, we’re looking for some great fantasy movies to enjoy. Now, however, these won’t be the usual ones that you’d expect like the Lord of the Rings franchise or Harry Potter. We’re going elsewhere into the realm of fantasy with these pics.

From far-off lands with daring knights to BAMF damsels, these fantasy movies will clutch at your imagination and refuse to let go. So when you ask if something is just real life or fantasy, then you’d have a pick of really excellent fantasy movies to pick from. Get ready to dive in with these choices.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Kiki’s Delivery Service is not the Totoro or Spirited Away of Studio Ghibli, but these beloved film has its fans just the same. We follow Kiki, a spirited teenage girl who is a witch. As part of her witch training, she must head off for a year to another town in order to grow her powers. Unfortunately, however, the only magic she’s really good at is her flying.

Ending up in a seaside city, Kiki and her cat Jiji both struggle to fit in. Kiki, especially, finds herself doubting more and more as time goes on. This fantasy movie is really mild on the fantasy elements, but they’re enough to really enrapture you. More importantly, the charming characters and powerful coming of age story is what really makes this fantasy movie sing.

Wolfwalkers

Wolfwalkers is a 2020 animated fantasy movie that slipped under the radar because, well, 2020. For those that have seen it though, they can’t get enough of this gorgeous film from Tomm Moore’s “Irish Folklore Trilogy”. Wolfwalkers is third of the films with the other two being The Secret of the Kells and Song of the Sea. In Wolfwalker, Robyn Goodfellow arrives in Ireland to help her father wipe out the last wolf pack.

Things, however, get dicey when Robyn meets Mebh, rumored to be part of a tribe that turns into wolves at night. Robyn falls deeper into Mebh’s world while helping the other girl search for her mother, coming close to becoming the very thing that her father wishes to destroy. The animation is gorgeous and the relationship between Robyn & Mebh is truly great.

Cats

Enough with the great fantasy movies, let’s bring on something so godawful, it may have started the 2020 apocalypse. You can’t prove otherwise, and would you really be surprised. Fantasy movies, for every truly great one, has some truly awful stinkers as well. Like, wow, so bad that you can’t believe multiple people said,  “Sure. Sounds legit. Let’s continue on the process. Nothing bad can come of this.”

Cats is the cream of the crop of terrible, terrible decision making. It’s fantasy in that, well, you have human-cat abominations singing & dancing. That’s not real. That’s . . . cursed. It’s cursed, but it’s so cursed that for many the true delight is in watching how badly this movie fails. It’s spectacular. 0/10 stars. But if you want something that you can laugh at in shocked horror? This is your fantasy movie.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Want something with animated people interacting with the real world that doesn’t make you want to stab your eyes out? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? remains the gold standard. A compelling mystery, a world where Toons and live-action people coexist (for the most part), and perhaps the only time you’ll see Bugs Bunny & Mickey Mouse share a screen together. If that isn’t fantasy, then we don’t know what is.

It’s truly the cream of the crop in terms of a “grounded”(ish) real world fantasy type of movie. And, honestly, who doesn’t ship Jessica & Roger Rabbit?
